New here!
« on: April 16, 2007, 05:55:01 PM »
Hello everyone.  I really do not know what to say.  However I will start off with the fact that I just purchased 300 Savage in a 7600 from Grice in Pennsylvania.  Do I need small based full length sizer?  I noticed with the regular RCBS sizer it seems to chamber hard.  Also I am a shorty.  It bothers me that I am probably going to have to shorten the stock in order to be able to shoot it decent.  It has nice walnut to me anyway.  I hate to hack up limited run gun.  I hope I am asking this in the right forum.  Nice to meet you all  :)

With as many forums as we have here there are usually several "right places" to ask a question. Yours is no exception. Yes I think you'll likely need the small base die set if they make one for it. Standard dies can work in the Remington pump and semiauto rifles but often won't. Small base is definitely better in my experience. Guns are tools, you bought it to shoot and to hunt with didn't you? If cutting that stock is what's needed for you to do that then cut it. My wife is only 4' 11" tall so all her guns need to be cut.

Welcome aboard.

I understand what you mean regarding cutting into a nice rifle.  That would be my last resort.  You might give Grice a call and ask if there is a shorter stock available for you rifle.  The last time I was there, in the far back room where the clearance guns are displayed, there was a wall full of aftermarket and factory stocks.  I'm just taking a wild guess on this, but perhaps a youth 870 stock would fit.

Grice regularly features limited run Remington's.  They are beautiful rifles.  Should there not be a short stock available, perhaps they can set you up with a used stock from a regular model that could be shortened.  That way you could restore the limited run model to its original condition should you need to.  Its sounds as though you've not shot the rifle yet.  It would be a shame to hack up that factory stock then determine you don't like the rifle.

If you do have to resort to having the stock cut, I would locate someone who could make it look like a factory job.

Good luck.

Why not buy an after market plastic stock and butcher it for hunting???  If you do cut your walnut stock, I'd have a smith do it (and measure you for a correct length of pull) and re-fit the recoil pad and all.  If done correctly, to the casual eye,  it won't appear like its been shortened.

First, welcome. Since you reload or have access to reloading tools, try running your brass through a RCBS .45 acp carbide resizing die with the decapping rod removed. I use a .45 die for my 7600 7-08 brass. The carbide die will only resize the web area at the bottom of your brass.

Thanks for the advice everyone.  Yeah I didn't think about getting either a Ramline or Rem. forearm and synthetic stock.  I'm going to be trying a nosler bt/accubond combination at 150 grains.  I think the 300 Savage is a neat looking cartridge.  Any way heres what else I have for other calibers:

7 Rem Mag (stainless/syn)  Ruger Mark II

243 Win Savage 10

308 Win Savage 110

260 Rem (stainless/syn)  Ruger Mark II

350 Rem Mag Classic Remington

17 Mach 2 New England Single

10/22 Ruger

My wife shoots a Remington 7400, and I also shoot a 760, both in 30-06.  I have to use small base dies for these two guns to work properly.  I also own several other 30-06s, single shot and bolt guns.  For them I use standard dies.

My wife is only 4"11".  When I bought her the 7400 I took it to a gunsmith to be cut down to her needed length.  The gunsmith almost cried when he realised how much he had to cut off.  He complained that no one else would be able to shoot the gun after he cut it.  I told him no one else would be using it, just her.  He really cried when I took her BAR in .338 Win Mag to have two inches cut off the barrel and the stock cut to her length.

But that is what was needed for her to be able to shoot them at all.  Glad I did she is my best hunting partner.

Rifle Fan -

Sorry I can't help you with your questions, but welcome!

I looked over you list of firearms and liked what I saw.  Rugers are my favorite, but Remington and Savage have yet to disappoint me.

You're missing out on a lot of fun by not having a .30-30 ...

Why shoot, jump right in, and welcome to you. Sounds like you're tryin' to load the worst cartridge in one of the worst rifles for that purpose. It can be done, but my Dad and I both had the same trouble, not enough camming power to extract the cases. Well keep 'em trimmed, and try the carbide die trick above, it'll be a whole lot cheaper'n a small base die.  ;) Other'n that you've got a fine cartridge in that Ruger, probably my favorite.  ;D

Oops!  Forgot add a Marlin 45-70 to the list.  It is the standard length version.  Got a great deal on it at Gander Mtn. in WI.  Mainly do my deer hunting in far northwest WI.   ;D

Marlin, I assume?  Mine is also standard length and I love it whether I'm shooing light plinkers with half the recoil of a .30-30 or what I call my "Rhino Blasters" loads that generate around 48 foot-pounds of bone crunch on the shooter's end.
