my son got an old springfield model 87A from my uncle. he asked if we could put a red dot on it and i looked it over to see if it could be done. this 22 has 2 screws on the side of barrel above the reciever. is there a special mount for this rifle?

Ask Charles N/M he has one of these guns maybe several and likes them if any one would know here he would.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Those two holes are for a factory peep sight. I've read that there were some after market scope mounts made that also fit but I've never seen any.  An inspired machinist could easily make up a mount to fit a red dot.  The problem with finding accessories for these rifle is they have been out of production that there is none of that stuff available now, if it ever was.
Here's a picture of the sight that is mounted using the holes.  You can see that by shaping some substantial sheet metal you could make a place to mount a red dot.
