Scope for .243 bull
« on: April 03, 2007, 08:10:23 AM »
I will be purchasing a .243 bull barrel to compliment my .308 Ultra.  I am looking for a fixed power scope.  I have a Swift Premier on my .308 and leave it set at around 4-6 power all of the time.  I have been doing some research on fixed power scopes and find that many like Weaver.  Any others that I should look at?  Thanks for the advice.

Depends on whatcha want to do with the .243, if it's a deer/coyote rifle, a 4x or maybe a 6x would fit the bill just fine, but for Varmints/target, I'd want a lot more power. I just bought a Weaver K15 for load work, it'll be working on a .270 ULtracomp tomorrow if it doesn't rain. ::)

Depending on your budget, you might want to consider the Leupold FX series, too.

I also have a Bushnell Elite 10x40 Mildot that's a very fine scope, depending on your use, it might be a good choice.

With the 243 being such a flexable round maybe a 3x9 or a 4x12 may be a better choice , you can use 55 to 100 grain bullets for everything from varmnints to deer so why limit yourself to a fixed power scope , not saying that is a bad thing but maybe something more versitile would be in order .

Sorry that I was not specific enough.  I will be using it for hunting TX whitetail, plinking and this will be my son's first rifle.  My shots will be limited to around 200 yards but more likely 50-100.  I'm thinking that a fixed power would be better/simpler/easier for me since I never fiddle with the variable scope that I currently use.  Am I correct that a fixed power scope has a larger field of view than a variable scope given the same magnification?

One nice feature of fixed power scopes is there's no power ring to interfere with the hammer, so the scope can be mounted lower without any modifications. ;)
