Puma .454 casull and .480 Ruger
« on: October 15, 2005, 11:40:20 AM »
Does anyone have any reports on the Puma .454 casull and .480 Ruger as to accuracy, how well the rifles are holding up, recoil level, etc. I am contemplating purchasing a pair and I need any relevant info.

Thanks,

Had my 454 Casull for almost 2 years now -probably 1000 rounds through it and its still as tight as the day I bought it! Accurate enough for me!  Couldn't ask for more ! ;D

I have a 454 Puma.Love it, yes it's accurate and painful ;DI load 300 XTP mags with 30gr.H110.Off the bench about 15 is all you want to shoot, off hand not so bad.I put a Williams FP on mine because the (old)sights stinks.

Ain't exactly the same, but I have a Rossi '92 in 45 Colt that I load with 23 gr of Lil Gun behind 315 gr cast boolits.  Gets about 1750 fps over my Crony.  That is 454 level loads and it's devoured many hundreds without any complaint.  I use 300 gr XTP's for hunting loads with same charge.  I occasionally load 265 gr swc's but they don't group as well as the bigger rfn's.

my puma 454 has a much smoother action than my winchester or marlin. I am somewhat recoil sensitive, but shooting offhand did not bother me. much less than my 45-70. some loads would fail to eject. I would try hornady jhp xtp 300 gr factory loads. I had to have the gunsmith tighten up the rear sight which was loose. He did it in a minute for free. I like the padded recoil pad. I would buy another and enjoy plinking with 45 colt.

Brian Pearce once did a report in Rifle/Handloader (I cant remember which at the moment) on the Puma 454.  Also, I believe you can find an online review he 454 at www.gunblast.com.  If memory serves the actions of both rifles remained tight after a bunch of shooting, but there may have been some other things, such as screws, that loosened during their tests.

i own a stainless 16" puma carbine in .454- and i absolutely LOVE IT . as stated above it is accurate enough for me, and yes it kicks with full power loads, but this is not intolerable. did i mention - I LOVE THIS LITTLE GUN!! everyones first impression of it is " that is a CUTE little gun", i usually reply " its cute until you fire it, then it becomes menacing". i am looking forward to introducing it to a nice whitetail this upcoming season. oh yeah- the ability to fire .45 colts through it is a bonus and allows you to adjust what power you want. i.e.- just plinking, or dangerous game hunting.

Ditto here on all comments from above.  I too bought myself one, Puma #92- 20"brl in .454 Cas. for Christmas.   Have only shot it once with handloads that I worked up from mild to very hot.  I purchased this one for pig hunting here on the California Central Coast.  Last year I hunted with a bolt action, but this one is so light weight that I had to have one.  Only concern is that after a few of these test reloads the screw at the barrel band backed out.  I tightened it as best I could and will shoot it again soon to see if it's going to be a problem.

A drop of Uncle Mike's Gun-Tite on those treads, and any other screw threads on your firearms that tend to shoot loose, will take care of the problem.  Gun-Tite is a non permanent form of Lock-Tite.
