30-30 strikes again
« on: April 03, 2007, 04:13:38 AM »
2, 400lb wild boar, one at 30yds one at 50yds. Both were broadside. 1'st boar dropped in tracks with a complete pass through of the lungs from a marlin 20'' in 30-30 with Federal premium 170g NP's. Second was on the run. 1'st shot was just behind the front shoulder, complete pass through, second shot was just for insurance and was through both front hams, no bone. Hog went down at second shot. Also from 20'' marlin in 30-30 but with 170g Rem. core lokts.

That sure must have been one  weird a$$ed pig.  All the hogs I've ever seen had hams on the back end and shoulders on the front.  Got any pictures?
Also, haven't you been reading the post in here?? It takes at least a 300WM with armour piercing bullets to take down a porkie.   :D

I like to know how a hog can have hams in the back and have hams in the front also? Raising those kinda hogs could make a man a lot of money.;D

I was kinda tired when I read your post.

At first I thought you said you shot a 2,400 lb boar!!!

I thought maybe you had been shooting rinos at the zoo.

swampthing,
Way to go. Don't listen to them other guys. Some guys have nothing better to do than try to make themselves look go on someone else's account.
You did good.

attitude is everything !
if the second hog had a bad one , and had his butt was up on his shoulders then the hams very well could have been up front ! i know i would have a bad attitude if shot !
all bs aside nice hunt !

Moderate velocity kills. Don't let them anatomy "experts" fool yuh. Picnic hams come from the front of the hog.  ;D

If a 30/30 was not a great gun/round then why have so many been made ?
It is an easy gun , easy to carry , easy to shoot and easy to store in a truck and easy to buy ammo for !
love mine !
I know people who bear hunt with them , hope the bears never read the articles that say its to weak ! hog wash !
I once read an article about a game warden who got trapped in a box canyon by 7 grizzly bears , he killed all 7 with his 30/30 ! 7 shots 7 dead bears . NUFF SAID !
how many bolt guns carry 7 rounds ?
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Any weapon I use to confront 7 grizzly bears will be large enough to need wheels under it. Because of the thurtty-thurttys  bone smashing accuracy and effectiveness is why all the PH's in Africa carry them as back ups.
A picnic is a shoulder off'n a hawg.  A picnic ham is something you put in a wicker basket and carry out to the park to eat.  (get it??  picnic?? picnic ham?? huh, huh, did you get it?? )

The article I noted above in no way suggested one hunt grizz with a 30/30 only that the ranger used what he had ! and it worked ! ( glad I didn't tell about the GI who shot a tiger with a M16 , or the native american and his .22 mag. )
I read quite a bit and don't recall any PH's using a 30/30 , you must indeed have read more than I , but a hunter named Bell did kill more than a 1000 elephants with a 6.5 mau. and a 7x57 ! And today it seems that one needs a crew served wepon to hunt anything larger than a jack rabbit !
I can only guess as to why this is but in the old days they hunted enough to know where to shoot an animal , and hunted for food or to make money . Today  hunters spend more on a hunt than the old guys made in a year of hunting !
this is neither good or bad , just the way things worked out ! some hunters only shoot one animal , get it mounted and hang the gun and the critter's head on the wall and from then on is a hero to his buddies . This is just the way it works now thats why ya need th PH.
as an example , I am past 50 , have hunted deer all my life , I have harvested many as have most of the men my age that I hunt with , we know as much as anyone about shooting a deer , that is not bragging it is a fact .
We have watched deer long enough to know how they act and cleaned enough to know where the important parts are ( the ones that keep um running ) , we know what our rifle will do since we get to use it alot ( in Va. we get six deer tags and can buy more doe tags ) I hunt with a 7x30 waters alot of the time , I see in print all the time it makes a nice ladies or youth gun , I guess it might . Would ya let your lady or kid hunt with a gun not up to the task at hand ?
well it has worked well on deer from doe to 12 pointers and alot in the middle ! I use the gun because it has little kick I did this for a medical reason , when the medical reason went away I kept using the rifle ! maybe the ranger knew bears , maybe in the 70's his issue gun was a 30/30 , who knows but it worked ! The old hunters may not of had a choice but what they had worked . So if ya feel the need for a cannon to hunt mice , many are on the used gun rack , I know of a .338 and a couple 300's . But i did keep one 300 win. mag. for when i hunt some new game animal , at least until I have collected and cleaned enough to "KNOW"
One last thing - we who live in the U S A need no other justification  to buy a rifle other than to want one , so why do we go thru. this dog and pony show about how all the other rifles made to date don't work anymore ? Be a man tell the wife ya just want it ! but it would  be best to wait till the bill comes or she finds it which ever happens first ! before telling her !

If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Oh yea , Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary 10 edit. defines a picnic ham as a shoulder of pork with much of the butt removed !
They didn't mention anything about a basket as related to the ham !
swampthing guess ya got 8 hams sort of ! nice shooting , sounds like your hunt was a real picnic !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
