To complicate the answer..yes..you can use it under a float(that type of fishing is referred to as float-n-fly), just cast out and slowly reel in. I use this method alot in spillways below our flood control lakes here in NW Mississippi. I catch crappies and whitebass (stripes) using this method. Smaller jigs that are used for bream, crappie, whitebass,sauger, walleyes, and trout are casted and them slowly retrieved. I especially like the horsehead (roadrunner) style jigs. Use a count down method to find at what depth the fish are holding..cast out and slowly count 1-Mississippi 2- Mississippi etc. till jig on bottom..reel back slowly..next time reel back at once less "Mississippi" until you find the fish..the school will usually hold pretty close to the same depth.
