Sight Installation Questions
« on: March 31, 2007, 04:23:13 PM »
Is it possible to cut a dove tail into a round shotgun barrel? (12ga Pardner to be exact)  Will it compromise the barrel by leaving it too thin at the cut?  How deep is the dove tail?

I want to install Marlin fold-down rifle sights on a smoothbore 12barrel to make it a slug gun.  Is this expensive to have done?   Thanks

Not cutting of dovetails is allowed but sights are available with bases contoured to fit the barrel. They are then soldered into place..

The average shotgun barrel is not thick enough to support a dove tail. Removes too much metal. At the same time, there are some "slug guns"/ barrels where the barrel is a lot thicker. Might get away with it. Might.

As said, many firms make a sight or sight base or combination that is contoured to the outside of a standard barrel (or receiver) and can be attached with a minimum of fuss with silver solder (or brass/brazing) or welded (if you are ALOT better than I am).  Brownells is the supermarket. Or you can go to each company and see what they are offering. luck.

Ramps and sight bases are best sweated or soft soldered to shotgun barrels. Most anything else produces too much heat. Can alter the blue and the temper of the metal in this critical area. Williams makes a shorty ramp that looks real good on a shotgun barrel With the bead of your preference in the right hieght you're in busibness. As to rear sights there are a lot of choices.. Enough to rive one to distraction. I would prefer a receiver sight screwed to the receiver..

Entire 12ga Pardner II slug guns, complete with sights installed, are generally available for about $125, or less.
It may pay you to obtain one, and sell what you have to offset the purchase.

Failing that, in my past experiences,  most Pardner shotguns have more than enough metal over the chamber area to support D/T for either a Williams WGRS peep or a Weaver scope mount base there.
