45-70 spitzer bullets?
« on: April 03, 2007, 05:17:51 AM »
I was looking at the 300 grn to 350 grn Spitzer bullets for my 45-70. They just re-opened the 300 yrd range again and I thought it would be fun to try this round. Is the BC any better with this rnd than others? Right now I'm using the 325 grn Hornady Lever Evolution rnd which seems to do well. If any body has a target load for the NEF with a 22" barrel that would be great. I have had flat shooters/Tack drivers in the past and already know what they can do but this is just fun beating the 22-250/6PPC guys.

As good as the Handi's are..I don't see any of them beating a 6ppc at any range provided the person shooting it knew how to shoot ::)

But...for a real accurate load that does exceedingly well at 100 & 200 yards...and drops deer in their tracks...try some H4198 Remington nickel cases Rem 9-1/2 primers and some Nosler 300 grain partitions and use a Lee Factory crimp die...Use the Hodgdons Annual data for the Leverguns...and you'll do fine...These bullets love to be pushed fairly hard...and your shoulder will wear out quickly if your not prepared for it...My accuracy load is right at 2400fps...It's sub-moa at 100 & 200 yards...

I shoot a lot of 300 grain hornady hollow points and they shoot moa with IMR-4198 and in the upper end of the documented 1895 Marlin loads. Now I also shoot the 300 grain Barnes x Bullet with the same load and it shoots sub-moa but it prints 6 inches higher than the flat nose hollow points. I have not chronograph these yet my guess is they are running between 200-300 fps faster will post back when I get a chance to chronograph them recoil is substantial but I have added a limbsave butt pad and it is a major improvement. There is still a lot of shove but it has taken the bite out of the 22" handi.

There's another semi-spitzer .458" bullet available that hasn't been mentioned, the 300gr and 400gr Barnes originals with respective BCs of .291 and .389, they should do well at 200-300yds. I have the 400gr loads made up with H4895, but haven't shot them yet, it's one of the many loads made this winter that have yet to be tested.  ::)

Since the Handi's are single shot do you really need to crimp?

I've found with my load it will constantly give single digit S.D & E.S. using the factory crimp die...It's the only cartridge I use it on...

After reading a detailed crimp vs no crimp test on another site, I use the Lee FCD on just about every cartridge I load for, it doesn't matter if the bullet has a cannelure or not, it'll still crimp em.  I believe it's one way of insuring consistency in neck tension without a lot work, just one more die in the turret and $10. ;)

Thanks.

I wonder if crimping is more important in rifles, such as the Handi, that have shallow rifling? I am guessing that the bullet takes much less effort to engrave in a Handi than in a rifle with a more traditional 0.450 / 0.458 bore.

Mac, I presume you are not shooting cast lead bullets and black powder?  I only 0.002 neck tension all the 45-70 and 38-55 reloads for El Cheapo.

Mac, You are right about the 6ppc being one of the top at the bench rest. I challenged him to a standing quick draw and beat him hands down. I was up against a 6ppc Panda Stoll with a 1oz trigger. I know I spelled it wrong, anyway I think with the help from you guys that I will be able to surprise them at the rest too.   ;)

I shot some of the Barnes 400gr SSSP yesterday, accuracy was excellent at 100yds, although I think I may have got a little bouce at recoil on the 3rd shot, that's with 50gr H4895, a near max levergun load, but I plan on shooting it with hotter loads on a future trip. It's also seated deep, they were loaded before I throated the 45-70 barrels, so velocity is down a little due to the longer jump, next loads will be to a longer COL and loaded well into the Ruger data. ;) I'll also be shooting it at 200-300yds! ;D

You may not make the itty bitty holes the 6mm PPC makes but it sure rings the steel plate a WHOLE LOT MORE! ;D

Are these the bullets that you were referring to?

For long range target shooting there is a couple 500 grain cast spitzers available as well.
shot placement is everything.
