Ruger no 1 30-06
« on: February 03, 2007, 10:51:10 AM »
I called my uncle the other day and he says he has a Ruger no 1 that he would sell to me for 400 bucks. From what I know about these rifles, they a re very reliable, accurate, and durable. What do you guys think?

I'd say barring any serious defects or problems w/ the rifle, that's a fine price. I've not heard of (relatively speaking) many ppl w/ complaints regarding thier #1's. Most that own one love 'em. I'd be curious as to why he want's to part w/ it, ya know the old saying - "If it sounds to good to be true...."

He wouldnt sell me anything that wasn't worth buying. He said he wouldn't sell it to anyone else for cheaper. The only thing is I'm 16 and have no money. I was thinking about selling my Mossberg 500 for some money for it. my mom said if I did that she would cover the rest because she knows how much I like my shotgun. But Mossberg 500 shotguns are very common and easy to replace.

That's an exchange I'd make in a heartbeat...  ;D I wish I'd had uncles like that... My uncles stole all my guns when I was 17.... vultures.

Last summer I bought a used Ruger No.1V for $400 out the door. That is the cheepest No.1 I have purchased. $500 to $550 is more common.
Great rifle

Saw a RSI in .30-06 today - pretty darn nice shape for $495.  had I not bought a #1A already this year...or had it been in say 7x57, I'd have grabbed it.

frankcastle13 -

That is a very good deal, one I would have jumped on in a heartbeat.  Don't own a #1 and never have but love the design and hope to have one someday.  I keep looking for a bargain like yours and will probably just have to shell out more money.

I have an International in '06 and a Medium Sporter in .45-70.  I love them and am always glad that Bill Ruger had such good taste.  To get such a classic like that for that money is really a bargain.  They are good shooters, reliable, and accurate.  There is sometimes a little tweaking to be done with the forend, but no big deal.  To me it's nice that us average folks can own an elegant rifle like this.  I haven't warmed up to the stainless laminate versions yet, but I feel it happening some day - in a varmint caliber.  I like shooting them, just working the action, everything about them.  The only thing I have found is that I have had to use extension rings to get a little better range of eye relief for scope mounting.  I am pretty average in size, but with #1's in particular I need a longer eye relief scope and still require extension rings to mount them more rearward.  With Ruger's ring system, that is no big deal and maybe that is just a peculiarity with me and my scopes.
I would jump at that opprtunity.  Every rifleman should own a #1! :)

If the No 1 is in good condition, buy it for this price.  You are correct in thinking you can replace the Mossberg later on.  You may want to try the Rem 970 next time instead of the Mossberg anyway.  I have a No 1 in 30-06 that is the International full length stock.  It really shoots 220 Sierra RN and 220 Gr Barnes FMJ within 3/4" consistently.  The 2 1/2 old Weaver scope comes off and the peep sight from New England Firearms goes on for really close work.  The barrel in this single shot is only 20", so the overall length is short yet amazingly well balanced.  A delight to carry.
