« on: March 26, 2007, 11:43:22 AM »
I have one with no after market components and was wondering what could be done to improve accuracy?

Some of them are accurate and some are not.  Mine is pretty good and will make 3 inch groups at 100 yards.  Never heard of any accuracy enhancing stuff for the SKS.  Maybe a new cover with a scope attached.

The only thing you can do is get closer to the target.  The sks is not known for an accurate firearm.

I don't think I have ever fired an SKS scoped or unscoped
that would do much better than about 3 - 4 inches at 100 meters.
The tolerances in it are just too loose. It is plenty accurate for it's
intended purpose though.

I've done two things to my SKS to "make it better".  First I bought a Williams aperature sight for it....nice sight, just snaps in in place of the original and does help my old eyes.  The other thing I did was buy a can of flat black paint to cover up that XXXawful wood they used for the stock.

I would benchrest it with some chinese norinco ammo and i'll bet it will shoot between 1 1/2" to 2" groups @ 100yds.

Put some moly on the trigger sear too that will make a big difference in accuracy it will smooth it out.

If you still have the bayonet or the cleaning rod in place, remove them.  The play in them may cause uneven vibration patterns that makes it hard to get any accuracy.  The other thing you can do is to slug the barrel and then use a bullet that is closest in diameter to the bore.  Actually, three inches at 100 yards is about as good as it gets using open sights.

I kept my bayonet on.. swing that sucker out and stick it in the ground for prone
shooting.... Makes a great mono-pod rest.

I don't have a bayonet and I do have the cleaning rod removed.

I have heard that the white box winchester 7,62x39 ammo is as accurate as the chinese norinco ammo is.

I purchased a well used chinese paratrooper sks a while back and we took it to the range to see how accurate it was.  While waiting for a cease fire to put our targets out i got ansy and started pinging small rocks on the berm at 100yds.  When my son got his hands on it i told him to aim dead on at 100yds and lets see how you do.  He shot a perfect 1 1/2" group with it. Then i took it and did the samething.  Thats an orginal untouched paratrooper sks with iron sites.
My scoped sks will shoot under 1" groups @ 100yds too. We were always blasting away, plinking at empty soda cans or peppering the target at 100yds, we were never serious about the sks's accuracy until i shot the paratrooper.

U thought the sniper sks was a joke everytime i seen one, but now there no joke at all, these puppies can shoot very accurately too.  It makes me wonder how they compare to a real  ak47 in accuracy.

I've bedded the stock done trigger work added a receiver mounted scope (not the crappy cover) and many other things to my Norinco paratrooper, In spite of this I would be doing great to shoot a 5" group at 100yds.

I had a Yugo that had nothing done to it besides adding a tech sight it was a honest 3" at 100yd gun
