Is 7.62 In An Encore 308 Barrel Safe?
« on: April 11, 2007, 10:28:46 AM »
Just got a .308 barrel for my Encore pistol.

I've got a case of Wolf 7.62x39 for our SKS shooting.

I've read lots of posts about the interchangeability of military 7.62 and civilian .308,  but for every group who says don't interchange them, there are always some who say they've done it with no problems.  Area of concern from the naysayers are: primer hardness, case dimensions, dirty powder/primer burning, etc.

Now I've noticed that Encore shooters seem to be above average in intelligence  (and more handsome) that the general population, so this seems like a good place to ask:

Is there a general consensus, one way or the other, about the safety of using military 7.62 in a high quality civilian firearm?

In a word, NO!
The 7.62X39mm is not interchangeable with the .308win. Not even close. The larger 7.62X51mm NATO is the one that is the same as the .308win. Who ever told you that probably "meant" to say the latter, so don't try it. Even with the 7.62X51mm NATO. I wouldn't bother, some military loads tend to be at a higher pressure than factory ammo, this is done to ensure the proper functioning of the semi/automatic actions. So why beat on your firearm with high pressure loads?
Be safe.

OOPS...I did mean to say 7.62x51.  My error.

If you meant 7.62x51, then don't try to send them down your SKS.  The SKS shoots the 7.62x39mm round, which is considerably smaller and has entirely different case dimensions.  Go buy or load up some .308 Winchester ammo and have fun.  The risk involved is NOT worth any savings you may gain using military surplus ammo.

I use 7.62 NATO cartridges interchangeably with 308 Winchester.  Years ago I got some cheap Berden primed 7.62 NATO cartridges that were sold as surplus from some South American country.  They turned out to be very good in my Encore and I've taken several deer with them.  Other surplus 7.62 NATO ammo hasn't turned out to be as good but I guess most of the time you get what you pay for.
