Anyone carry the Springfield XD-45?
« on: June 24, 2007, 05:14:13 AM »
Seriously considering buying a Springfield XD-45 compact for my CCW.  Please forgive me if this is a stupid question (I am new to CCW) but I was just wondering if anybody can give me some tips on how you carry and conceal a pistol this size.  Many many thanks!

I carry mine in a inside the pants uncle mikes holster. Works alright but still is a good sized gun. I do like the XD compact for handling and accuraccy. I'm thinking maybe a small revolver, 357mag,2in might work better in the summer in a ankle holster. Harder to hide a XD under a light shirt. Still think the gun is a good one.

I carry the XD-45c in a Desantis Speed Scabbard (OWB). I carried all day today with shorts and an untucked t-shirt; to the mother-in-law's, to the Wal-mart, a couple of gas stations, etc. The kids didn't even know I had it on until we got back home.
Using the outside type holster forces an untucked shirt, and I figure that sooner or later I will try an IWB holster like a CTAC or something.
The most important thing I have done is to get a 1 1/2" holster belt from www.thebeltman.net. A good belt makes all of the difference in keeping the grip close to your body.

I realize it is not a small pistol, but I seriously doubt I am undergunned with 10 sots of .45.

I'm with Carbine Mike, I carry a 45 Ruger P97 in a Uncle Mikes inside the waist band holster (7.99) and with my shirttail out it is never  noticed by anyone, the same holster will also hide my Ruger 357 mag and my Taurus 41 mag. Very versatile holster, only one i need and use. Check them out...JimP. ;D

My summerwear is a J frame and I seriously considered an XD for carry. A friend picked up a Glock 36 with 6+1 with a skinny slide so I compared the XD and G36 and went with the G36 due to it's 27 oz weight, loaded. I shoot an XD 9 in IDPA; but, for cool weather carry, I like the G36.

I carry the XD45C. It is only 1/4 inch longer in the grip than my XD40SC. I carry with a Tucker Answer IWB.

I carry the XD9 subcompact with this holster...http://www.desantisholster.com/n87.html

I love them both!  The XD line offers great pistols with great technology.  I got this one right when they came out and have never regretted the purchase.  Although not as easy to conceal as a J frame, I manage.  I'd much rather have a slightly bigger pistol that I carry 10+1 rounds in than something I can conceal better and only have 6 or 7 rounds.  Just my opinion.

Desantis has some other great holsters if you don't like the one above.  I've been very impressed with the durability of this holster.  I carry it every day.

I carry the XD 40 SC and love it.  It's extremely accurate and reliable.  I carry mine in an Uncle Mikes IWB holster in the small of my back and sometimes I stuff it in my vest pocket or pants pocket.  I don't really like the Uncle Mikes holster because it's a little to small for the gun so thanks to XD 9's comment above I'm going to be purchasing a Desantis holster. :)   I had and XD 40 4" model and it was a bit to cumbersome for a CCW and I sold it for some stupid reason. :)  Now I'm looking for the Tactical model with a 5" barrel chambered in 45 ACP, I'll mount a light and laser on the rail and it will be tucked in my nightstand in the bedroom. ;)  The XD's are great pistols and are the only auto pistols I'll ever buy again, but I have to admit that all the glocks I've handled and shot were very nice as well.  Good luck to ya, and let us know what you decide on.

You won't be disappointed by the holster KenSel.  I have a couple of them...one for my Bersa .380.  They're slightly stiff when you first get them but they loosen up quickly.  Enjoy!

I carry an XD-40SC as well, and pack it in a don hume iwb holster. I generally carry in about the 5 o'clock position, and find it hides well under an untucked shirt or leather vest. My next buy will probably be the xd-45, just because

I carry the XD-45c in a DeSantis Tuck-This IWB.  It carries very well and conceals well with just about anything I wear.

EastKY, do you feel you can draw well from the Tuck-This holster?  I looked at those, and almost bought one, but it looked like they may be difficult to achieve a quick draw from.

The Tuck-This holster is a 'little' slower to draw from than some of the other models, but since I often need to wear a shirt and tie sans jacket it offers me what I need.  Good concealment  sometimes presents a compromise in terms of a speed draw.  It sure beats the alternative of not having the weapon on you though.

Even with the slight speed penalty in drawing, I'm very satisfied with the holster.

YMMV

I agree...better than nothing at all.  I just wondered if it actually does what it says by allowing you to carry it with a tucked in shirt.

Yes, it conceals very well for me.  I simply 'blouse' the bottom of my dress shirt a little bit and it hasn't been noticed.  This includes people who know that I regularly carry.
