mM1895 Winchester Peep?
« on: March 25, 2007, 04:42:55 PM »
I  have a m1895, ser.#3xxx, cal .30 U.S.(.30-40 Krag). This rifle has a dovetail cut in the top of the bolt. My question is did this rifle come with a bolt peep and if so where might I find one. I inherited this rifle from an uncle and really don't know much about it. Any help would be appreciated.

I've never seen one that had a bolt mounted peep sight.  If it did, it may have been after market.  There were several receiver mount peep sights to put on them, but I've never seen a bolt mounted peep on an 1895.

Contact Frontier Americana, Box 887, Fargo, ND, 58107, 1-701-241-4440.  This outfit advertises a copy of the original Winchester bolt peep for the 1895.   They should be able to help.

i think it will be the same bolt mounted peep that was installed on the model 71 . i have also seen a factory bolt peep on a model 64 in 219 zipper . the best way to find out is to get a winchester book either by  G. MAIDIS , or  A. PIRKLE  . very good reference books .

I found a pic, where an aftermarket XS peep was installed on an M95 bolt - no dovetail, though. It looks like a D/T job, IMHO.

The bolt peeps on the M95, M64 and M71 would not be that similar since each of their bolts has a different width, depth and contour.  I strongly suspect your dovetail is from someone adapting some other type of sight since the bolt peeps I've seen were simply drilled and tapped, not dovetailed.  I still think it best to call Frontier Americana for starters.
