They are the same.  A marketing ploy by Winchester to compete against the Remington 700 ADL and the Savage 110 series of rifles back in the day.  I've seen one 770 with a two position sliding safety.  That probably means that there are many more out there.  If you are trying to buy one, make sure that it has the three position Winchester safety on it.  Other than that, it 's a great gun.

 What is wrong with the two pos. safety?
 I have had no trouble with mine on these or my '60's mod 700 Remingtons.
