Rusty, if you can find a copy of "If The South Had Won the Civil War", by Bruce Catton I think, read that, it's honest. The author was a historian and had a good grasp of the real situation. He makes some coherent arguments on how it could have happened at Gettysburg and the likely end results for both North and South. It ends with an amiable rejoining of the sections after fighting side by side in WW1 and WW2. The story has the South not being crushed and it's industry becoming quite strong in the late 1800s. And he clearly shows how blacks would have been freed by about 1880 or so, without anger on any side.
The book is a good read and thought provoking. I read it in '65 or so but it still sits hard on my memory, just not sure of the author now!
