mini 14 value
« on: March 24, 2006, 02:20:03 PM »
A friend of mine has a stainless mini 14 with a wood stock and otherwise a standard gun. He claims it is very valuable because of the particular range of the serial number.  I see these guns for sale often for 500-575 bucks. He claims its value is 1000 bucks. My research comes up with no evidence of a ruger mini 14 worth that. Any ideas? Thank You in advance for any help!

One of my friends when I was younger had the best luck, everything he owned was a special run by the factory and only offered for one year. His Honda had a lightweight chromoly frame and more HP, his Model 70 in .270 had a factory target barrel in the sporter profile, almost everything he owned was like that. What an incredibly lucky guy.

The earliest Minis (180 series IIRC) are almost impossible to find parts for. The next series had a 1:7 twist so they are nice if you want to shoot 75 gr bullets, however even those only bring $350-500.

Ask him what kind of groups this $1000 wundergun shoots. I'm guessing 1/2" or maybe even 1/4" if it's one of those in that special run of 50 Mini-14s that Ruger made that one year only.  :-D

Actually, there are some that are worth that to the right person.  Pre Ban with original folding stock and ruger 30 round mag would probably sell for well over 1k retail, close to 1.5k.

If he is right, and you are into collecting and not shooting it could be worth it.  My experience with mini-14's and most people that I have talked with is that they are terrible shooters unless you put mucho bucks in ti modifications.  If you plan to shoot it you might consider an AR type rifle from a reputable manufacturer.  Most decent AR's will out-shoot a fixed up Mini-14 right out of the box.
