new 500, scope mount ?
« on: April 16, 2007, 06:52:32 AM »
Just picked up a new 500 S&W this weekend. Fit and finish wasn't that great but for 211$ i can't complain any. I was noticing that the open sights set up fairly high. has anyone mounted see thru sites on theirs? With this gun i would really like to have that option. I looks like you can see write over the base mount with the sights being that high. One other thing. What bullet would be a good starting point with this beast.

I am not sure that any see through rings can handle the recoil of a 500 with full power loads.  With the mass of the scope up so high there is a lot of torque on the rings.  There may be some more solid rings with a small hole through the bottom that would work.  Another consideration is the lack of cheek weld on the stock on a high scope. The 500 is not one to let "come at you" when you pull the trigger.  It has some pretty vigorous recoil.

I've got a Nikon Prostaff on my .500, it's mounted in Leupold low QRWs. If you were to use high enough mounts for the scope to clear the sight, or a scope short enough to mount behind the rear sight like a 2½x shotgun scope, Warne or Leupold quick release rings are known for maintaining zero when remounted and should work fine.

I would highly agree with eskimo on his post. Cheek weld goes a long way on felt recoil. Your head is carried back with your body.
With a craned neck looking thru the scope, your head will snap forward on recoil and the scope will definitely leave an impression. A low power variable or fixed low power scope belongs on this rifle and its short comings have to be dealt with by practicing. Due to the hammer on the Handi's, the scope has to be mounted quite high as it is. Those 6-48 screws should be retapped to 8-40 threads to help durability.

I wouldn't be concerned about the 6-48 screws in the scope base, I've shot way too many hot loads thru my .45-70s and .500 without a problem, if it was an issue, it would have been reported here before, and it hasn't.  ;)
