Powders for K Hornet?
« on: April 17, 2007, 05:23:59 AM »
I've owned several .22 hornets in the past and found very few powders suitable to them. I've had no past experience with the K hornet but wouldn't expect it to be much different as to powder preference.  Powders have changed since I last owned a hornet, some old ones gone and some new ones have appeared. I used to prefer Win 680 but that is long gone. I know H-110 is good but how about "lil gun", aside from its' stupid name. Who names those Hodgdon's powders anyway? At one time they had three different powders with the word "clays", really a dumb idea. Anyhow, is Lil Gun a good hornet powder and does it bind up measures like H-110? How about Accurate Arms 1680? Would the slightly greater capacity of the K hornet make use of AA-1680? I'd like to run bullets of 45-55 grains.  All replies will be appreciated.

Any powder that you have had good luck with in the Hornet case should work well, you`ll just be able to put alittle more powder in the case.

Lil' Gun is a great powder for the KH, it has larger grains than H110/W296 so no, it does not bind up measures, 1680/WC680 is a little slow but does work well, 2400, 4227, and N110 are also good choices.

Thanks Reed, I picked up a can of Lil'Gun yesterday, even though it's such a stupid name that I was embarrassed to ask for it.

It is really a good all around powder, in the .38 SA it gets some of the highest velocities I've been able to get, same on the 9x23 Win and runs much better through a hopper than bluedot.
