.30 Gov't '06 pushing a 165gr Nosler Partition @ 2,750 fps, in a (you guessed it) Pre-War Winchester M70.  That combination has provided nothing but one-shot kills for my brother and me over the past 30 years, at distances from 50 feet to 175 yards.  With Winchester and Remington factory loads, it provided similarly excellent service for my father and his brothers for the 25 years before that.  Dad bought it second-hand when he got back from Korea.  Just got it back from a complete buttplate-to-muzzle restoration, and hopefully this combination will provide many more decades of service for my sons once they get old enough to play this game.

I have taken deer with about 20 different cartridges. If there is a better deer cartridge than the 270, I have not found it yet. 7MM-08 would suit me just about as well. ;D
shot placement is everything.

I hunt allot of open prairie, soybean and winter wheat fields so my favorite is a 7mm mag loaded with 140 grain NBT's or 140 Accubonds. My average shot is usually around 300 yards or better with a close shot being around 200 yards.

.308

Using Federal Supremes until I run out.

I believe they are 165 gr (maybe 168?)

Ammo is easy to find, reload and many weights to choose from.

NATO cartridge.

Shorter throw...over .06 and mags.

Accurate.

Devasting on deer.

I shoot a Remington Mohawk with 3x9 in Michigan.  If I had to buy new, I'd get a Ruger Compact and 2x6 compact scope.

50% treestand hunting under 100 yards.

Mine would be a toss up between my 7MM/08 and my Swede!
Ive taken more deer with the 7/08 because I have three of them, but I really like the Swede.
I currently dont own a 308 but it was one of my first deer rifles and it reallly works.
I didnt know they made such a thing as a 7mm08 or a 65x55 untill I was grown and if I wouldnt have found out about them Id still be shooting a 308

7-08 in my Rem 700 sps. super accurate and usually they don't run more than a few yards.
Every so often I use my 30-30 win model 94 which my dad gave me 50 years ago. It still drops them dead in their tracks.
