question about .410/45 guns.
« on: April 24, 2007, 03:33:20 PM »
i am thinking about getting another .410/45 to have a new project gun. could one take a .410 shotgun rated for .45's also and have the barrel cut down to 16-18 inches fashion a pistol grip for it and fix up a reasonably accurate little single shot handgun? if so what would i have to do to do this? is it even a good idea? thanks ahead for any help u all can give me.

I think that you might be running into leagal complications cutting a shotgun barrel to less then 18 inch and putting a handgun scope on it. Also if im not mistaken the tc full lenght shotgun barrels are not rifled so wouldnt work anyway.

i had planned for an 18-20 inch barrel with open rifle sights and just a cheap single shot .410 slug gun like the rossi's i think. i wanted about an 18 inch barrel with a pistol grip so i'd have a long range handgun with long barrel and since i don't know about any .45 barrels in that length and my uncle used to kill deer every year with a single shot bolt action .410 with a rifled barrel he would shoot .45 colts out of it. i was thinking about doing this to hunt exclusively in ohio because you can use handguns and i personally love a revolver but i dont care alot for the short barrels and would rather have the long barrelled single shot.

i have just checked rossi's website it's considered a .45/.410 rifle. would i be able to take one of these guns and cut the barrel down to say 18 inches and change the stock to a pistol grip and it be considered a handgun by law? if so would this be able to be made accurate enough to hunt deer with?

I think you'd STILL be in violation of several ATF(E) RULES. There is some thing about a total length in the rules. Best thing is to check it out.

You cannot legally turn a shotgun or rifle into a handgun. Your best option is to buy a T/C Contender or Encore handgun action ( and grip of course) which will then be registered as a handgun. To this, you may add a 16" or longer T/C .45/410 barrel which will be both legal, and rifled, to therefore shoot .45 Colt through, when you remove the choke.

i wanted to turn it because that is the only way i could ever afford it. i would only be out about 250 bucks on the setup i was gonna do. a        t.c contender handgun would cost me about 450-500 at least id say.
