Handi 444?
« on: April 17, 2007, 02:13:57 AM »
Who has the Handi rifle in 444 Marlin? Do they shoot as well as the 45-70's? I have been looking at a Marlin but my bad shoulder makes it hard for me to use a lever action rifle. How long has the 444 barrel been available?

The .444 is in production right now, barrels have been broach rifled by Marlin in 1:20" twist, so far no one has one yet, I'm waiting for mine. I was told yesterday it would be another month or so before I get it. The current barrels have .4308" bores, SAAMI spec is.431 ± .001 and .4248" lands,  SAAMI spec is .425 ± .001.

My gun shop couldn't find one at any of their suppliers. I guess that's why. ??? I thought about reaming the 44 Mag but my gunsmith is swamped and its impossible to et anything done. I have been waiting for six months for the 357 Max he is doing for me. Who does does your reaming work?

Reaming 357 to maxie is no big job, I did mine myself. took about 15 minutes.
Last year at the P dog shoot in Hooker Ok We saw a man ream one in the shade of a
ceder tree.  I don't 44 Mag to a 444 Marlin could be much more, But would take longer.
 Just my 2 cents. Marv.

The 444 Marlin is a tapered case which involves more work when reaming from the straight 44 Mag chamber. That is the reason you cannot fire 44mag ammo in a 444 chamber. The 44mag chamber can be opened up to the straight case 445 supermag used in the Dan Wesson revolvers. In real world, I would not attempt a 444 rechamber from a 44mag barrell. Tolerances have a way of snowballing to a pile of junk.
