5.56mm in a .223 barrel

I have heard that 5.56mm ammo will not work, or is not a good idea in the HR. Is this true? Can anyone point me to info on this? They are very close to the same round, but not identical.

If it's true I wouldn't have bought the rifle. I am kind of counting on Mil-Surp ammo to make this cheap to shoot. One of the reasons I wanted a .223/5.56mm is because Mil-Surp ammo is so cheap I wouldn't need to worry about reloading..... If I have to buy the parts and pieces to reload a new caliber it kind of negates the savings I thought I'd found. :-[

H&R puts a warning in the box with every new .223  NOT to shoot 5.56 NATO ammo in the .223 Remington.

 Not only will 5.56 NATO not eject from an ejector handi. But as of late surplus 5.56 in NONEXISANT and what little is still out there costs as much as commercal. remember there is a war going on.

I didn't get that paper with my rifle.

Oh well, Nothing to do now but shoot it. So it's time to shut up and go find me some ammo.

I was looking at some Lake City ammo the other night that was priced alot better than most of the .223 I was finding.

I shot some Ultra Max from mine and it used LC brass. I am not sure if this is the same but the groups were very bad about 2 1/2 at a 100 yards.

I put 2 rounds of 5.56 NATO green tip through mine when I first got it.  Both times it popped open when i pulled the trigger.  Thought there was something wrong with the gun until I read the paper that came with it.  Yeah I know read the instructions first but I'm one of those guys that tosses the instructions to the side on Christmas Eve and then wonders why it takes me all night to put a stupid toy together........ LOL

On a side note I found 4 boxes of wwb 45 gr bthp at a local pawn shop today.... Picked all 4 up for 14.99 a box.........

I guess I'm confused.  For $14.99/box, how many rounds is that if that's a good buy? Moot anyway, if WWB is NLA.

WWB was 40 or 50 rounds per box, usually the 40 round boxes are what folks find, but the 50 round loose packs were available too.

I too have fired Mil. Spec ammo in my 223's and have all found the same result. The best I ever got was a one time group with 55gr Wolf HP of about 1 1/2" and I do say one time.
Remington UMC shot better (1" pretty consistantly) and after my barrel broke in the WWB 55gr FMJs shot as well as the UMC's.
Though these 2 I consider safe in a Handi and not exactly Mil. Spec.
It's worth saving your $$ and putting it to quality ammo (that is now only about $1 - $3+ more than Mil.)  that will be more accurate, give you less problems, and be even safer in your firearm.
Reloading for the 223 is pretty cheap, as it goes very easy on powder. And bullet selection ranges from very cheap to Match grade.
