S&W custom shop or Colt
« on: June 10, 2008, 03:10:22 PM »
Any opinions on a S&W custom shop 1911 and the Colt special combat 1911?

Both are quite nice however for that much I'd be shopping Les Baer. However, you probably didn't want to hear that so I'll get back to your question and say that my 2 Colt SCG's in 45 function flawlessly and are pretty accurate. I almost bought a PC1911 but the safety wouldn't function when the right side lever was pressed. Aside from that they are pretty much a toss up I'd say.
Whichever you go with, there's no bad choices there.

In a Les Baer I'd recommend looking at the Premier II and also go with the 1.5" package on it.
If your dealer doesn't have a line on one, John at Proload might even have them in stock and has good prices.
I have Les Baer's both with and without the 1.5" package and yes, you can tell the difference.
Mine is so accurate it's almost boring. (it's also 100% reliable right out of the box)
They make a lot of different models, all are made to the same degree of fit/finish. Get the one that has the features you want.

You'll really enjoy the wadgun! Congrats.
My wadgun showed up today. I got it from John at Proload.
The mount sure is a pain to work around but it's a sturdy one and should work well.
The other 1911's are a Premier 2 with the 1.5" option and a TRS.

Bought the Les Baer Wad Cutter.  Only have 300 rounds thru it.  Works great and the accuracy is outstanding.  Use 4 grs. of bullseye or 5 grs. of 231 with either a 185 or 200 gr semi wad cutter.  It doesn't seem to care, they both shoot fine.  Thank you for comments.

The wad gun comes with a 13 pound spring, I replaced mine with a 16 since the load I shoot is a 200 lswc and a small 5 gr charge of WW231.

Take any pics of the new one yet? :)

You have hard that Les Baer guns are addictive? You can't have just one. Before long you'll be plotting the next LB.

Lynnie:  Is the 1.5" you reference a Les Baer model number or is it a reference to what the pistol will shoot or is designed to shoot??  And, of course, is it designed to shoot that well with hardball???  Thanks.  Mikey.

There are number of VERY good semi-custom producers of pistols out there---and, yes they are addictive--even too look at. I agree with Lynnie's advice, it is spot on.

Most of the 5" 1911 that Les Baer makes are guaranteed to shoot 3" or better at 50 yards. I believe that is out of a Ransom rest and with Federal 185 match ammo. The hardball gun is tested with hardball of course and the SRP with hollow point ammo and I think in their description it tells what ammo.
On many of the guns a 1.5" option is available in which Les Baer will guarantee that the gun has shot a 10 shot group at 50 yards from the Ransom rest with probably the 185 match ammo. A proof target is provided with those guns. The group size on my Premier II is just over 1" and on my wadgun it's 2".
The wadgun was guaranteed to be 2.5" or better, I didn't pay for ther 1.5" option on it.

My wad gun came with a target that was 1 7/8 for 10 shots at 50 yds.  I took delivery on Wednesday, it is now Saturday and I have 400 rounds through it.  I have shot it over a rest.  At 25 yds. it cuts a rough hole.  At 50 yds. my best is 3 inches over a rest.  Not too bad for an old guy.  I have shot some jacked target loads that does very well.  However, I am interested in lead target loads.  I had a few miscues on the first few shots, until  I adjusted the bullet seating depth.  Have had no failures to feed or eject after adjusting the bullet depth.  This is a fine pistol as it should be.

Irons.  It will never be used in a match by me.  I have a number of silhouette targets a various yardage.  At this stage of the game going to the range is day care for seniors for me.  I am a serious plinker.

That pretty much describes me as well, serious plinker. I have my own steel targets that I take to the range.
I got one wityh optical mount just because I've always wanted a 1911 with optics.
Congrats on the groups you're getting, years ago I could see well enough to do similar but now I don't have the vision for that task.
That's pretty good shooting for iron sights, more so once you're past 40 years of age.
