Should I crimp?
« on: June 05, 2007, 12:29:57 AM »
I have never crimped rifle bullets but I am now loading for a 6.5x55 SE with a long lede and it is not possible to seat the lighter bullet weights for a short jump to the rifling. Would crimping be a solution?

It might be worth a try.  Still, it's always good to get a caliber worth of bullet in the case neck.  I am aware that this is not always possible with light bullets, and the typically long throat in a 6.5x55.

You may have to live with the limitations of that rifle, and stick to 120's, or 140's, but a Lee Factory crimp die might help with 100's.  Of course, you could have the barrel set back a bit, and rechambered, but that takes more money.

I concur with Gwindrider. The Lee Factory Crimp Die(FCD) is well worth a try and not expensive. With my 30-06, I found that seating the bullet with the cannelure just inside the case mouth(where the crimp would be into the cannelure) and then using the FCD gave better groups than seating the bullets out. The crimp did not help bullets without a cannelure(Hornady SST and Interlock vs Interbond).
