Need reports on the Ultra Varmint Fluted in .223
« on: April 26, 2007, 12:21:00 PM »
I sure like this rifle but something keeps making me hesitate from purchasing it and I think it's a lack of knowledge. So, what can you tell me about your UVF in .223? Does it make a great long range shooter? What is the heaviest bullet that can shot accurately? How's the trigger and lock time? What do you not like about it?

Anything else you what add would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Can't help ya with the 223 fluted Ultra, mine is a 22-250, but very few folks get the 1:9 or 1:12" twist .223 barrels to shoot anything heavier than 60grs, with the 40-55gr bullets shooting the best. A few 1:9" twist barrels will shoot 68-70gr bullets with the right loads, but good reports on those weight bullets are few and far between.

Lock time is the same as any other H&R, not as fast as a bolt gun, but it doesn't seem to be a detriment as good shooters can make them perform very well. The transfer bar system will cause a new shooter some issues if they don't follow thru with the trigger pull, read the Handi Basics 101 sticky for more on shooting an H&R.

The Choate Varmint forend is idea for bipod shooting, most find it to work very well, mine still shoots better rested under the hinge, but I think it's the exception,  or many of those that say it shoots real good from a bipod just aren't as discriminating as I am. :D

my 1 in 12 ultra varmint will shoot the 70 grain speer semi spitzers pretty decent, but they are no longer than a 55 grain v-max.

The 70gr Speer would be a great deer bullet where legal, but it wouldn't be a great long range bullet for varmints with a BC of .219, even the 63gr Sierra Varminter beats it in BC at .240, and it shoots good in either twist rate. Another one that has a good track record of shooting good by some that have tried it, is the 60gr Vmax, with a BC of .264, it would be one to try for long range varmints, it's rated for 1:7" to 1:12" twist rates.
