Lapua 338

What is the Lapua top FPS in the different 338 bullets. I own the 338 RUM and know what they are for it, but I never hear much about the Lapua. Does anybody know?  ???

According to the Hornady manual, The .338 Lapua will do 3250fps with 200g, 3000fps with 225g, and 2800fps with 250g bullets. Basically the same as the RUM, but with a shorter barrel and faster twist rate. The Lapua's test rifle was a 24.5" 1-9 twist Sako, the RUM was from a model 700 with a slower 1-10 twist, 26" barrel.

My Barnes manual lists the 160 gr. at 3622 fps, 175 gr. at 3505 fps, 185 gr. at 3463 fps, 200 gr. at 3358 fps, 210 gr at 3289, 225 gr. at 3165 fps, and the 250 gr. at 3024 fps.  for the 338 Lapua.

Thank-You Redhawk, My 338 rum is about the same except the 250 max FPS with my RUM is 3015 FPS and none of my rounds are Barnes bullets.

Started to get a Lapua last spring, got a .338/378 Weatherby instead.  With a Nosler 225gr Accubond, and 104gr of IMR7828, my Chrony is saying 3210fps.  That's out of a Weatherby Accumark.

Sourdough,  With my 338 RUM I can push the 225 gr Nosler to 3178 FPS And it shoots a three shot group 5/8" at 200 yds. I'm happy with that.
You got 32 FPS faster then me.

I have also found out that the Rum shell holds more water then the Lapua by 1.5 grains. I know Big Deal, so what!
But thats a fact.

When I was looking to buy a new gun last year I wanted an AR-30 in .338 Lapua.  I liked the fact it was all metal, and that Howitzer brake looked good too.  Did shoot one, and they shot very well, with almost no recoil.  But the factory was shipping everything they made at that time to the big sandbox.  Therefore I got the Weatherby instead.  And I'm real happy with the Weatherby.

I am also in the debate right now between .338 lapua, .340 weatherby, 338/378 weatherby....  leaning towards the 338/378, just because of the raw power.  I'm looking for a long range hunter, not a plinker.

Was with a friend last year that shot a Brownie at just over 800 yards with a .337/378.  One shot, bear fell in it's tracks.  Of course that friend was a Marine Scout Sniper, and knew what he was doing.

Never had the chance to hunt Brownies, but never heard of a guide that let anyone shoot from that distance either (not on TV shows anyway, that's as close as I've gotten;)).  Just too much chance of a bad shot and a wounded brownie to follow up.  I'm not going to criticize, but no matter how good I was, I wouldn't want to have to track down a wounded brown bear, especially when he was so far away at the shot, I wasn't sure WHERE he was hit.  Glad your friends fell on the spot.
