30-06?
« on: April 17, 2007, 10:20:33 AM »
I see very little posted about the handi 30-06 rifles. I find it hard to believe that no one is shooting them, so am I to assume that they shoot so good that no one has problems with them and don't bother posting any problems or results ??? Let me know your thoughts.

I have 2 of em, if that means anything, they both shoot very well. There are lots of posts on em, I'd bet a Handi that 99% are good reports!!

I just purchased my synthetic in .30-06 shot it a few times and now it is presently in Georgia in route to Massachusetts to be fitted with a .45-70 barrel and to have the firing pin rechecked. Even after careful shooting and properly holding the trigger I still had a few misfires. But that had nothing to do with the .30-06. Within just a few shots I was shooting free hand at a 6" 100 yard plate with my favorite load of Hornady 180 gr roundnose with 57.0 upto 57.5 (hodgdon max) of H4350. My savage .30-06 is an older model around 1994 and the throat is short so I have had to keep the OAL short. But my savage loves the pressure. It was kind of nice to stretch them out a bit. I only missed the plate once and that was no fault but my own.

Has NEF/H&R ever produced a 30-06 with a 26 inch barrel?  I've been thinking about my 'next' Handi and really like the 30-06, but am enamored with the 26" barrel.  Ballistically There's probably not a whole lot of difference between a 22' and a 26" barrel, just 'want' one that length.  Plan on shooting long range targets with lead bullets......just like the challenge and have a bucket of nice once fired 30-06 brass with the same headstamp.

Guess I could neck the brass down to .280.

Not that I'm aware of, the only 26" rifle barrels have been the 25-06, 280 and RMEF 35 Whelen. The 7x64 Brenneke was 24".

I posted so much about my 30-06 a couple of years ago that people got tired of hearing about it.  Mine was right out of the box and shot nothing else done to it, other than adding a Shepard scope.  Yes a $170.00 gun with a $700.00 scope.  The gun deserved it.  I used it mainly for shooting Caribou and Wolves.  I kept shooting wolves farther and farther away.  300, 400, 500, and 600 yards.  Then I discovered that I could hit them on out to 700 yards, but the cartridge did not have the velocity left at that range to make clean kills.

That barrel and scope were stollen, now I have a replacement barrel with a Burris scope.  The scope has the Balista-plex reticle that only goes out to 500 yards.  There fore I limit my shots to 500 yards or less now with my Handi 30-06.   I don't carry this gun during the summer due to the strong possiability of running into a Grizzly, and I like having a slightly heavier bullet than then 30-06 can support.

I remember your posts Sourdough and I remember when your scope and barrel were stolen. That really stinks! I guess the major reason I posted my question was because I hadn't seen anything in later days and I want to send my receiver in to have a 30-06 barrel fitted and I just wanted some reassurance that they were good shooters. Besides one of my muzzleloaders, my handi 22-250 is the only gun that I can shoot off hand with great success, so I want a 30-06 barrel for deer season.

Yes Sourdough I enjoyed your 30-06 post as well. Good hunting stories! My 30-06 shoots so well that's it's kind of boring so I don't post much on it either. Good gun, great cartridge.

I've had quite a few of them in 06' and they all shot great except for 1 I got off my neighbor for some money he owed me...I worked hard at finding a hand load for it that would do better than 1-1/2"at 100...but couldn't...It would shoot factory about the same...so I traded it on another rifle ...It's a darn good round and will work for just about anything you want to hunt...Go for it...you may wind up with a real tack driver like I did with my Ultra Comp..or a average shooter...either case...you can't really go wrong with one in 06' it's a great round...

I'm too young to remember Sourdoughs stories about his 30-06,young meaning being here on G.B.O. Sure do like reading his adventures tho.I'll have to do a search and read up on it.I like the 06,but I did get a bull barrel in 308 and fitted it to my receiver, haven't got to shoot it but 9 shots so far sure hope its a shooter.

No coincidence really...I've only acquired a hand full or 2 of complete used Handi rifles in my life..and a smattering of used barrels...I much prefer dealing with new products...not taking on someone else's problems or having to correct their mistakes...This is exactly what I did with this one rifle...I knew the rifle very well...and had done an extensive amount of reloading for it already...but hadn't used any factory ammo in it yet...I was either going to get it to shoot or I would use it for trading purposes...which is exactly what I did..and accommodated a friend/neighbor at the same time..since he didn't have the cash to pay for some work I had done for him in his home...I can honestly say that I have had more problems with the used Handi's I've gotten...then with the new ones...

For me...if I can't make a rifle hold a consistent 5 shot group of 1" or better at 100 yards with various ammo..under different weather conditions...I don't keep them for long...It doesn't matter to me if I get one for $80 dollars in lieu of a debt owed to me,as in this case ...or plunk down my out of pocket cash...It's the way I have been all my life...and I have no intentions of changing my standards at this stage of my life... So...there is no correlation on this or any other matter..as far as I can tell ;D

Sorry...I thought you might be insinuating something about me in a veiled  way...like someone else has been has been doing of late :( No big thing really...

I've only had about 5 or 6 rifles I really dis liked after buying them...None of them were Handi's...

I had one and it really shot well. However, the recoil was fierce. I have had two rifles in my life that I kept that didn't group well. However as strange as it sounds, nether rifle would ever miss the point of aim by more than and inch and a half. You could bet that irregardless of the target, that bullet was going to hit within about one and a half or inch and a quarter from where I aimed. One rifle was a 788 Remington 308 and the other was a Handi rifle in 280.
shot placement is everything.

I had a light Savage .30-06 bolt rifle that really kicked .  I put a recoil brake on it & it really helped .

Has anyone ever tried a recoil brake on a Handi ?

H&R has made the Ultra with brakes on them in the past, I have three of them, two 270s and a 30-06, very nice to shoot IF you and anyone near you wears hearing protection, not very nice if you don't. Even the 30-06 shooting 200gr partitions is very comfortable to shoot, very little muzzle rise and recoil feels like a 243.

Last winter I returned my 30/06 barrel back to NEF because the barrel became loose, mistakenly thinking that the factory could tighten it up. When it came back, they sent me a new barrel, this one with an extractor instead of an ejector. Since then I have tried minimum loads in it with bullets ranging from 150 grains to 220 grains, maybe a total of 50 rounds so far. This barrel is remarkably more accurate than the old one. This evening I shot some 220 grain Sierra RN's with a charge of 51.2 grains of H4831 in Winchester cases and CCI 250 primers. The first 5 shot group measured about 2 inches. Four rounds went into about an inch, with one flier opening it up to 2 inches. I'm pretty well satified with that, but I'm hoping that as the barrel becomes more broken in, the groups will get better.
