Still here, just been working a lot.  Been having a lot of bad weather also, Haven't been able hunt or work on food plots, but that will change in about a week. Then I will get to be back to working on hunting lease.  I do have a question about food plots though. Last season, after I disc and seeded my food plots, I set my disc for about 1 inch and re disc my food plot to cover seed. Would I be better off to drag some other type of equipment to cover seed better? keep in mind I am using a four wheeler. I thought I read somewhere that Land_Owner used a chain link fence before? If so does that work better or would I be better off discing 1 inch deep like I did last season? My oats and wheat come up fairly decent but I thought they should have been better.

Can't say about using a shallow disc. Seems like it would work OK. I use a old chain link gate with a couple of concrete blocks tied on it for weight. Works good for me.

I tried a old set of bedsprings once, they worked pretty good.I took a 5ft section of cultipacker and converted it to 3pt hitch and that thing is awesome but took some time to build..

Chain link fence works great provided there is sufficient soil moisture in the upper 0.5" of soil or if you get a gentle rainfall after seeding.  Bed springs sound like they worked too.  I have used the disc at 1" straight till and it did fine but I really like finishing the day driving around in #2 high gear with that chain link fence following me.

For your ATV use a piece of fence about 6-feet wide x 12'-feet long and stretched out with a doubled 2" x 4" x 6-feet on the ATV end.  Put weight on the fabric with some 4-foot or 6-foot rebar tied to the fence fabric in various places.  This will keep the the fabric on the ground while you charge around covering the seed.  It is quite fun and works great.

IMO, shallow till and a good wetting rain are the right mixture for wheat and oats.  Mine are doing VERY well this way right now.

Good luck.

Hey dude!  Don't get you undies in a bunch.  There are 15-something dozen other Boards on Graybeard.  I've been here...but mostly there.  Get it?

I've put herbicide out in fields.  That is ALL.  It is TOO DRY, TOO HOT, and there are TOO MANY FIRES here in FL to plant anything and expect it to germinate...much less survive.  These are the Summer Doldrums we're already in..that started in MARCH.

Tune in to some of the other boards and chime in.  There is still plenty of time to talk Summer Food Plots before Winter strikes.

I AM HERE...even when I am over there.
