I got to thinking while working on the base to my Coehorn which is coming around nicely is why are the ends shaped the way they are? Is it to give it some style or was it function.

Just kidding--I like the way they look.

There is a picture of an artillery park in the AOP Coehorn folio that shows three different treatments of the top corners of the Coehorn base.  They are the traditional pre-war cove style with the flats and curve, a plain rounded over corner, and an even simpler plain chamfer.  Presumably the simpler treatments were used during wartime production.

Maybe, it is used to scrape the mud off your boots, or to make it acceptable to the wife as a piece of furniture in the house. :P
