just a short story,,,
15 years ago ??? i bought a marlin model 25 from an old friend of mine, because i felt sorry for the rifle, it had been in his pickup under the seat for years n' years,, all rusted up,trigger gaurd broke, stock all skinned up,peeling, looked bad,,,but ??? i thought hummm ??? theres hope for this old girl...
paid him 5 or 15 dollars ?>?? i caint remember..
made a home made trigger gaurd, soaked every thing in diesel fuel, scrubbed off the rust, took a wire brush,n' bench wire wheel,,stripped off the marlin stock finnish...
used linseed oil,,rubbed it in for days,,
its been the most accurate rifle for the price i've ever had, took me awile to get used to the backwards saftey.........just yesterday,,i bought a red dot from BSA [cheap] made for tip off scope groves.... im shooting .5 inch groups at 50.
with winchester super x's
oh !!! yeah our ol' buddy twobits out in wyoming gave me a ''free'' new clip for it,,works great,
im shure most of you have a story like mine..

I have to agree. I purchased an old Lakefield 64B semi auto at an auction for cheap. Completely stripped it down, re finished everything and shoots 1" groups. Found my new chicken gun.

Even I got lucky once. An aquaintence told me he was looking to trade a Marlin levergun for an autoloader which I just happened to have. I hesitated and he offered $15 boot! I expected problems with the rifle he was trading off. I don't like pig's in pokes but when he brought it in I was aghast. It was lightly rusted all over, the forearm was cracked and the finish was badly skinned up. Steel wool and WD-40 fixed the rust and epoxy the cracked forearm. I refinished the wood and reassembled the result. I still have the Marlin a M39 pre A. I installed a Williams receiver sight and 1/2" groups a 50 yards are common. I don't use it much any more but it's my rags to riches story...

PS- I had only $30 dollars in the Marlin auto!!!

Gunnut 69 sounds like you got the best of that deal, the boys over at the marlin rimfire site would think you are the finest horsetrader of all for that deal. Jim

:D  Hi, Jim!  You get around as much as I do!
My rags-to-riches story is a Mossberg 146b I bought off a young man at the range - his Grandad had died, and they were having to sell his guns to pay for the funeral.  The old boy had guns all over the house - and under . . .  That's where they found the Mossy!  It was a rusted ruin.  I figured to use the stock for a project, and feeling generous gave him $40.
Looking down the bore, it was shiny!  I started cleaning, and the rust started coming off - even the peep sight and feed system weren't ruined!
After refinishing and reblueing, it's a good shooter and a good looker.
He couldn't believe it was the same gun when he saw it later.  It's now my favorite squirrel rifle.   8)

Big dog, Sounds like you just caught it with surface rust and no pitting so it looked worse than what it was. Good deal for you and I bet a fun project restoring it. Jim
