Savage 24V
« on: February 20, 2007, 11:30:55 AM »
I bought a Savage 24V at a garage sale.  It has a .222 on top and a 20 gauge 3" on the bottom.  It shoots pretty good, but has anyone else had experience with this firearm?  How was the accuray of the rifle?

I've had one just like it for years. Have used it mostly with reduced 222 loads for squirrel hunting, but I did have a choke tube installed and have also used it for turkey. Accuracy with the 222 can be pretty good, but a little inconsistent. I might shoot a 1.25" group at 100 yds, and the next time out the same load will be 2"+. I just tried TAC and shot a good group with it. I have a Mueller Shotgun Scope on it. The trigger isn't great, and that doesn't help.

My trigger is really light.  Maybe someone worked on it before I got the gun.  I have a Leupold V-I on mine and use my own handloads.

I have the 30-30 over 12  24. The 12 is one of the tightest shots I have and use it Turkey hunting. 30-30 shoots really well and is consistent.

Only problem is the trigger must be pulled all the way at one move. If I lightly pull the trigger it will fail to engage proper. I just try remember to pull all the way through. Which I do most of the time when shooting.

I've one in 22 Hornet/20 that I bought in 1984.  The Hornet barrel is extremely accurate with 46gr Speer FP's at 1500 fps.  Great turkey and squirrel gun.  The 20 barrel also shoot very tight with 3"  #4's and is centered in my crosshairs at 40 yds. Most of my hunting(except deer) is done with either this 24v or a 24DL  in 22mag/20 that I remodeled as a canoe/pack gun.
