Reloading the 7mm 08 in an Encore carbine for kids
« on: April 27, 2007, 04:33:42 AM »
I have a new 7MM 08 rifle barrel for my Encore.  I'd like to shoot the 120 Hornadys for deer (kid load).  I am working up a light load using H4895, which seems to be a good powder for cast bullets at lower velocities.  I'm looking for any suggestions, and thanks.

I used Hornady 139 SP with 36 grains of 4064 and CCI primer.

Hodgdon's H4895 powder is identified by them as a reducible powder (60%) for youth loads. Use the following link for more information. Or, give them a call at 913-362-9455.

skarke;

I'd try some IMR-SR4759, about 23 grains if I'm correct with that 120 grain bullet.
I had a Remington Model 7FS with an 18-1/2 inch barrel. with that powder and a 120gr. Sierra spitzer it was a real tack driver at about 2400 fps. Should do about the same with that Hornady bullet.

Thanks everybody for the posts.  I'm gonna try the 4895 first, cuz I have some.  I'll start with 36 G, and prime it with some BR-2s behind those 120 hornadys.  I'll let everybody know how it shoots.

BTW, this is a Bergara Encore barrel in 24".  It has a very nice chamber, tight and straight.  The rifling is shiny with few tool marks, and lockup is good.  It shot OK (9s with reduced H380 45G and 140 Noslers), but I know that it'll do better.

I bumped the shoulder to about .002 HS clearance, and the 120s about .005 off the lands.  We'll see what happens tomorrow with 36.5 of H4895.  This is one of Hodgdons Extreme Powders, its supposed to be pretty temperature stable.  Hopefully if it proves to be in the ballpark, I can tweak it a little more and load up about 20 to last a few years.

you really want to have cheap fun with your kids find or make some cast bullets and shoot them with about 8 grains of unique.

What about a 30 30 load with unique?  I have a great shooting 30 30 barrel, cast bullet equipment that I use for muzzle loading, and lots of interest in Lloyds's idea.  Thoughts?
