Cast Bullet ID?
« on: May 05, 2007, 01:39:38 PM »
Ok all you cast bullet aficionados, I need some help!! ;) I found about 200 of these at a garage sale, they're in perfect condition, someone did a great job casting them, and about 350 others in .459" 405gr original FP 45-70 style, all for free!! I'd like to shoot the .455" bullets in the 45 Colt barrel after I size them to .454". It appears to be made for a gas check, has a meplat that measures ~.310", is .690" long and weighs 231grs.

Thanks,

Tim

If you strike out here, you might check out gunloads.com and check into the Cast Boolits crowd. There are a bunch there from the old shooters.com cast forum. They really know their stuff and have some of their own designs made by Lee molds.

Tim, I have a couple of loads that work well in my Blackhawk. They should be pretty close:

Standard .45 Colt loads

Win large pistol primers

8.0 Unique - 850 '

11.5 Blue Dot - 890'

Ruger Loads

10.2 Unique - 1100'

13.5 Blue Dot - 1200'

These are all for 225-250 gn lead and I use them interchangably. All are from a 7.5 " barrel

Joe, I left out that I need to know what the bullet is so I can order the correct top punch to size them, but thanks for the load info. ;)

I got a reply in the Cast Bullet forum, it's probably a Lyman #452490.

Thanks for the advice RugerNo3.

It does look like a 490......the meplat looks a little sharp, more like a H&G mold. In any case, it looks like a 424 punch would work.

Or go with the Lee sizing die which pushes from the bottom of the bullet/G.C. so no top punch is needed....

I've had a Lyman 450 sizer/luber for about 18yrs, top punch and .454" die have been ordered, but thanks. ;)
