I have been thinking when I send my receiver in for other barrels that I might want to order a 45-70 along with them. I see that the 45-70 that is 22 inches long comes with open sights. I really do not want open sights on it because I will scope it any how. Probably a 3x9x40 Prostaff Nikon. Can I get it without any sights at all and just have them install a scope rail. I know you can order a barrel that only comes with a scope rail with open sights for something like extra $50.00 but don't know if you can do it the other way around. If you did do it this way they should knock off some money because you are not getting the sights they charge $50.00 for. While I am on the subject about sending in for barrels. I am pulling my hair out trying to decide which. I know I want a 25-06. I know I also want a 280 and a 45-70 but I am having a terrible time trying to decide what order to get these in. There are just so many choices and to little money. I will only be able to send in for 2 or 3 barrels at this time.

45-70 first!!!!!!!!!! If i could only have one Handi, it would be the 45-70...........super fun and super,super accurate!

 Dale Everybody needs a 45-70, they are a hoot to shoot! :D
 You can load from pop gun loads to shoulder busters, What ever you   
 . can stand. I don't know about the other two, Never fired ether one.

Termites are swarming! Got a AR16 ,a 357 Ruger Blackhawk, and pick up a S&W MP 45 this week. HummmmmmmI don't have a 280 or 25-06 Handi yet!

Because I want them. Really I am a accuracy freak. I love calibers that shoot fast and flat. That is really my only reason.;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I want the 45-70 because I want to shoot a big bore and it has the most options in factory ammo. Seeing as I don't reload yet.

 You can customize your loads. That's when you love the 45-70.

To answer your question, they will install a scope rail in lieu of the sights, but they won't give you a discount. I recommend you get the barrel with sights and have them add a scope rail/hammer ext for $18, then you'll have the best of both worlds. I made that mistake when I ordered my first 45-70 barrel, kicked myself ever since for not just spending the $18 and get sights and rail!! ;)

No barrel minimum, or Ironduke2 wouldn't have been able to get 11 barrels fitted on one order, he's got the record!! ;)

45-70 is the only way to go.  Put everything else on the backburner. 

Save ALL your brass and get yourself into reloading.  The 45-70 will satisfy every load.  Where else are you going to find a bullet that retains 52% of it's energy 500 yards away and is used out to 1000 yards.

Just my opinion but 45-70 is the most addictive round next to a simple 22 rifle.

The 45-70 is a must have rifle. I agree with everything that has been said so far, And if you start casting your own bullets  they're practically free.

I agree that the 45-70 is a must have. I wanted one for a long time, and several years ago I bought my first one. I now own three. I use mine for deer hunting and it's my favorite deer cartridge.

I'm with you, saying it's a REQUIREMENT.   If there's one type of chambering that's demanding an old-style break-open or lever, it's a 45-70.  The other,  tho more lever-biased, is the 30-30. ( Anyone shooting a 30-30 in OTHER than a lever is suspect. . ;D)  There's got to be some law on this.  . or something. . .so if there isn't, I'm tempted to write my congressmen.  Every self-respecting NEF owner should have a 45-70 bbl, and at least toss some ceremonial lead out occasionally.     To me, and maybe I'm in the minority by a million-to-one,  'straight-wall' rimmed is the natural in a nostalgic breaker.

Bottle-necks, jacketed bullets . . .  are Intruders.   It's ok, but you better HAVE a straight wall in the closet, or safe, cabinet, rafters, door-stop..  . or it's just plain bad ju-ju.  Why tempt bad karma.

The three hand's every body needs are 45-70. 30-30. and 22 Hornet.  You gotta love the ol timey rimmed cartridges.  I killed 4 deer last year with the 45-70, 4 shots.  They were loaded at trapdoor level, and it kicks like a 20 ga. shotgun.  But when you step on it a little, it WILL get your attention.

Without a doubt the 45-70 is the one to get.  The 45-70 was my first Handi, before I knew anything about them.  I bought it in 1992 and will never get rid of it.  When I had it scoped my hefty load of H-322 behind a 350grain Hornady roundnose would make a sub-half inch group.  No kidding, I could completely cover three holes with a single nickle.  Trouble was I thought all Handi's shot this good, alas it is not so. 

Notice I say, "When I had it scoped".  I took the scope off once I started hunting with it.  I hunt in the woods where the scope is not really necessary.  Without the scope the rifle is far more handy (pun intended, but the name is perfect for the gun).  It wont likely get a scope again.

I bought a Handi 45-70 for primitive weapon season in my state last year. I like it so well that I used it a few times during the regular season.The caliber impressed me so much that I purchased a Marlin Guide Gun chambered for it. Haven't hunted with that one yet. I say you should get the one that will meet more of your needs 1st. Then get into reloading.
