Which scope for my .375 H&H Mag?
« on: May 21, 2003, 08:26:43 PM »
I have a new Winchester M70 Classic Stainless in .375 H&H Mag with a McMillan Stock and open sights.  I took it to the range a few weeks ago and was shooting factory PMC ammo with the 300 grain Barnes X.  Let me tell you, this gun ROCKS! :biggun:

People say that a .375 H&H gives more of a "push" than a "punch" with regards to recoil.  Well....I'd say it gives BOTH.

With the open sights (and keeping in mind that I was cleaning the barrel after EVERY shot in order to properly break in the barrel) I was getting about 1.5" groups at 50 yards.  I'm certain that the spreads were a little big because of the oil residue in the barrel after each cleaning, so I think that, after barrel break in, I should shrink the groups down quite a bit.  Plus, I also flinch a bit, so I need to work on that problem.  In addition, those iron sights are not the best in the world either, but I don't plan on using them as my primary sights.  Rather, I plan on mounting a scope - ergo the purpose of this post.

So what scope do you guys recommend?  Please keep in mind that, although this is a BIG GUN, I plan on using it 99% of the time for - believe it or not - big wild hogs. :)   Yup, I got frustrated some years ago when I had a 75lb boar charge me after I shot it through the lungs.  Dang thing made me climb up a mesquite tree!

Anyways, as such, I don't need the traditional safari scope in the 1.75x-5x-20mm range.  Hogs, even at 200 pounds, are not as big as, say, a cape buffalo or a grizzly, but they are every bit as mean.  I say this because, since the hogs are small, and I will shoot them within a maximum of about 150 yards (with 75 to 100 yards as the average), I would like to have more magnification than, say, 5x.

Theoretically, I COULD get your traditional 3x-9x-40mm.  Such a magnification would not have a wide FOV such as the safari scopes, but again, it doesn't matter.  My thought is that, IF and WHEN I do go to Africa or Alaska - you know, for the dangerous Bigger animals, I can get another safari scope for it.  Oh, BTW, I do plan on getting the scope with some sort of quick detachable scope mounts, so this way I could have 2 scopes for the gun.

On the other hand, I could start off by getting a safari scope because, in part, they generally have longer eye relief - which you NEED in a gun like a .375 H&H.

As such, I was initially thinking about the New Burris Safari LRS with the new Illuminated Fast Plex.  However, there are two things that I don't like about this choice.  First, everyone tells me to stay away from Burris.  And even though I own a couple and don't have any problems, I am worried about their customer service.  From other posts, it is evident that they will not back behind their product.  And if they do, it may take months to get it fixed.  Second, it has Posi-Lock which I consider to be useless.

Based on that, I was thinking about the Leupolds and Bushnell Elites.  The Elite 4200s have very short eye relief - that's my only gripe about them.  They have an Elite 3200 in 1.5x-4.5x with the new Firefly reticle for under $200 - not bad.  Problem is, although it has longer eye relief than some of its 4200 siblings, it is still relatively short at 3.6".

The Leupold Vari-X III 1.75x-6x-32mm on the other hand, has eye relief from 3.7" to 4.7"  That's much better.  The problem here is that it costs double - about $400.00.

I strongly advocate buying the best optics you can get.  As such, I may just get the Leupold.  I own a few Vari-X IIIs with Illuminated reticles (they cost about $625 each), but, as I have said before, Leupolds are overpriced.  Then again, on a super hard kicking .375H&H, you want a company that will stand behind its product if it breaks - and Leupold is the best in the business in that department.  As such, I try to consider the extra price of the Leupold as a built-in insurance policy.  Anyway, I was also thinking about the 2.5x-8x-36mm.  Then again, since this is my "Hog" scope, I could get your 3.5x-10x-40mm too.

On the other hand, the Elite 3200 is also tested to 1,000 rounds of .375 H&H recoil.  And, I have heard that Bushnell also has very good service - or at least that's what their warranty says.

So what are your thoughts guys?  Remember, 99% will be for big Hog hunting.

Zachary:  I voted for the 2.5 x 8 since you already talked yourself out of the lower magnification and the other one is rather large so I went for the one in the middle, hope you like being PUSHED I sure am glad I went thru all of that years ago when my body was much younger ( the largest I ever shot was a 460 weatherby ) never again I was told it just pushes you I wonder who came up with that statement anyhow sure has been pased around for many years, anyhow enjoy :-D  :D   JIM

Zachary, have you looked at the 1.5x6 Nikon Gold? It has great eye relief. It has a 30mm tube so it will be a little heavy but on a .375 that may be a plus. I know you like Nikons and generous eye relief. I've had limited hog hunting experience but around here they move at night so catching one at first light or late in the day is when hunters have the best luck. The 30mm tube and large objective lens would be a plus for low light. :money: Dave

I agree with Dave, that Monarch Gold 1.5-6 is a sweet scope.  The brightness and clarity is outstanding.  It is a little heavier than the other scopes, but optics make up for it.  It is a very reasonable priced 30mm scope.  It the 30mm is out, I would go with the 1.75-6 Leupold.  I am a believer that people over do it on magnifaction.  I think they just like to see that big number.

How about the Pentax 1.75 - 6 X 36?  It has slightly less eye relief (4" - 3.5"), however it is adequate for your big boomer.  The real advantage of the Leupold is the ability to order the reticle you want ( I would get a German # 4 for the 375).

So this is you main boomer?  It's a little large for ground squirrels though.

How does it compare to the 338 for recoil.  Some folks have told me they actually like the 375 more than the 338 (both firearms weight was approximately the same).  They said the 338 Winchester had a noticeably sharper push.  My next hunting rifle will be one of these two calibers, and I am just collecting opinions now.  One opinion on these two calibers is that the 338 W is produced by more companies and is usually cheaper (it is also a shorter action than the 375). :coffee:

I thought about the Burris/Pentax 1.5x6 too but ruled it out due to the way they're made. I have a Burris Signature and love it. I had it on my M70 30-06 first and now on my M77 .243. I had to have the stock shortened on my M70 so I didn't have to crane my head forward to get close enough to the scope. Best thing I ever did. A LOP of 13" on my M70 is perfect for me. I have a Pentax 2x8 on my 06 now and it's not much better for mounting than the 1.5x6. The problem is the scopes are shorter and the distance between the turret and bell are short. They are great scopes to me but could be a problem for some to mount. Dave

Zackary, I wish I could tell you what scope to buy but I can't. I think you know what is best for you. If I read your post right you are going to use the 375 H&H in Africa and Alaska also. I think I would put the best scope on the 375 H&H I could get. So many people buy a good gun and put a cheap scope on it and blame it on the gun when they can't hold a good group. I would not be afraid to put a Leupold on it. I have a Leupold  Vari-x111 3.5x10x50 on my 7mm and it does a super job. Another scope which would be better is a Swarovski, but that is a lot of money. Good luck on your choice and let us know what scope you get. Carl L.

People that I have talked to that use Swarovski scopes say that: they are optically the best glass on the market.  I have heard several hunters (folks that went to Africa) say that the Swarovski scopes are not as dependable as Zeiss or Leupold.
On a dangerous game rifle set up I would want the scope's strongest optical aspects in: 1. Dependability, 2. Field of view, & 3. Eye relief.   :P

After buying a couple of expensive scopes from theopticzone, I guess Jon knows me pretty darn well. :)
