Smoked A Gobbler With The Pedersoli:
« on: April 27, 2007, 06:24:27 PM »
Shot a bird with the BP scattergun last weekend.  That was bird #3 and in Nebraska, I'm now done.  I shot the first bird on 4/11 with a conventional shotgun, one on 4/21 with the bow and one on 4/22 with the Pedersoli SxS 12 ga.  Now, I'll move on to morel mushrooms.

Congratulations, on your Gobbler. I also have a Pedersoli, 12 guage SXS, with screw in chokes. What do you use for a load ? I have tried different load combinations, and wads, and have had poor results. Can't get a decent pattern at 25 yards ! I have tried traditional cardboard wads, and tried felt wads, with no luck. With 90 grains of FFG, I have used my powder measure to measure equal amount of shot, # 4 and #6, and even more shot, 100 grain measure, still no luck. Maybe one of these days I will find a load that works.

I got fairly good patterns in my 62 cal NW Trade gun using paper cylinder wraps with an over shot wad glued on each end to hold it and #6 shot together. Took a lot of experimenting using different kinds of paper and number of wraps to get the right combination so it would open timely and consistently,  sometimes it would penetrate the 25yd target as a single slug, a little less paper and it would open immediately out of the muzzle and pattern density would be poor at 25yds. There was an article on it in either Muzzleloader or Blackpowder Hunting a long time ago, don't remember which.

My Pedersoli is an older one, with fixed chokes. I wish it had no chokes at all, it would be easier to load.  I use post notes as shot collars.  I don't depend on the sticky glue to hold them though, I also put a small amount of scotch tape on them to ensure they hold together.  I cut them to fit after experimenting as to how tall my shot column might be.  As for loads, I like to use Goex or Swiss FFG and about 90 grs.  I follow that with a card wad that has been separated in half thickness.  I then load two felt wonder wads.  For shot, I like a duplex load of about 1/2 0z of 4 and a full 1 oz of 6 or 7 1/2.  On top of that goes the over shot card wad.  My patterns are not perfect by any means but they are sufficient to kill em dead.  I once shot two turkeys with one shot. In the fall for pheasant I load 70 grs of 777 powder in FFG formulation.  I skip the post-note shot cup and load only 1 1/4 0z of 7 1/2 or 6 shot.  Again, patterns here have some wholes but have enough consistancy that I do kill pheasant with it. I love this gun.  I shoot some clay birds in the off season and I have to say, I hit more with this gun than I do any of my conventional cartridge shotguns.  I use the Hodgdon 777 during the fall bird season so in case I don't get around to same day cleaning, I'm not in too bad of shape and it does perform well in the old girl.
