ps- and for our discussion purposes GB has set big bore for .375 and up, and if you can't trust GB, who can you trust?  ???

GEMSBUCK -- yousure do have an inflated view of yourself don't you? i mention this as my evidence is once i mentioned my son shooting the 45/70, despite not mentioning him shooting at elephants, buffs, or the like, i simply mentioned him shooting the gun and the FIRST THING to pop out your mouth was to question how many elephants he had shot?  quick to jump to that pathetic argument.  here's a few quotes and opinions by those with much more experience than yourself, of whom i find imminently more qualified to speak than yourself. afterall, how many elephant have you taken?  i'm sure it's less than these fine gentlemen.  obviously bell used small calibers but here's a direct quote from ole' teddy roosevelt.  i believe he's "been there and done that."

TR -- (pg.322) "our experience convinced us that both the winchester .405 and the springfield .300 would do good work with elephants; though i kept to my belief that, for such very game, my Holland .500-.450 was an even better weapon."  -- you think the .405 is superior to the modern 45/70 loads? never said the bigger calibers weren't "better", but TR's opinion is quite obvious.

whether you think him nutty or not, taylor felt anything over 50 on his KO values to be adequate for elephant stopping but preferred rounds over 60.

from cartridges of the world compiled by randy barnes -- on the 9.3X74Rmm "...................it gained a good reputation in Africa for general use against most game, including elephant."  did it say ideal? no, did it say as good as a .458? no, did it say it got a solid rep. based on how it worked, yup.  that's the argument, not that the 45/70 is ideal, but that it's plenty adequate as it's easily on par and some would argue etter than the 9.3X74Rmm.

call these guys a liar and tell them they need to read more.

"Randy Garrett's 45-70 Hammerhead 540-grain hard-cast at 1550-fps went 55-inches into wet newspaper." "The 500 Nitro Express with a solid weighing 570-grains penetrated 48-inches into wet newspaper, followed by the 458 Winchester Magnum with a 500-grain solid traveling at a muzzle velocity of 2260-fps and 47-inches of penetration." Penetration tests conducted at the 2001 Linebaugh seminar.
- John Taffin, American Handgunner, July / August 2002 -- as have mirrored mine and my cousins tests and if you don't think my cousins wanted their big 460's and 458's to do better you're a fool.

you can go on sixguns.com and call ole' john a liar yourself.  tell him he needs to get out and shoot more.

fact is the 2000-2200 fps barrier is and was needed with expanding soft points per many many authors, when sticking to hard solid slugs, this is not so much a problem and i'll give you a clue, take your .458 win mag you're so fond of and load it down a touch and use exiter or punch bullets and see your penetration increase as fps will be loaded down but those bullets won't deform and will penetrate any media you select with more bullet stability than any of the solids common to the .458wm and will therefore out penetrate it.

i was simply stating why an animal would die a week later and as i am aware of elephant hunter's penchant for turning up later to collect once the softening up happened, i was referring to your seemed implication that the calibers used were effective only if you saw fit to show up a week later.  now don't get your panties in a wad b/c i misread or misunderstood what you meant by that one sentence.  you've been doing so on many accounts on so many threads it's ridiculous.

here's your own words from a year ago.

"If the 45-70 would've been  brought out in England or Germany with today's good bullets it would be considered a fine short range cape buffalo caliber. What the snobbish type dislike about the 45-70 is an over the counter rifle can be bought new for under $500.
A .458 bullet of adaquate construction at 1800-2000fps is a killer no matter how much that burns the butt of the "English NE" crowd."

i believe cape buff is DG is it not?  not sure the range you think we're advocating but i believe you said it best!

its a good thing i washed my fire suit today.  its getting pretty hot in here.  seriously though i htink i am leaning more toward th e 45-70 for the game i will be hunting.  95 % of the time this will be a whitetail rig.  the other 5 % will split up between black bear, hopefully moose, and the bigger bears(griz/brown). i am particular fond of the marlin 95 as stated before, my dad has a guide gun a

With due respect to Graybeard , and in no way trying to start another argument , Winchester made a " big bore " rifle in .375 .356 .444 and .308 and called it a big bore , and yes i will only call .375 big bore on this site ( I agree )
the first three are noted to be good bear choices the last has most likely been used as such so all are dg guns .
If ya read back thru. the comments it seems that with experince and confidence in ones ability and knolege of the game to be hunted the choice of bullet dia. or case length becomes less important as what bullet and where it hits !
Better to put a 45/70 where it counts than to miss with a .458 win.
and with little respect , the britts catered to a few rich guys the US gun builders armed the masses , and we have bailed them out twice because of their short sighted ideas on guns , WW1 & WW2 ,
when we are all alone with our rifle of choice facing game dangerous or not , when the hammer falls and only when it falls will we know if our choice was the right one !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I do not know of anyone that has owned a 1895 Marlin in 45/70 that has not liked it alot. I own one and have taken my largest whitetail buck with it. Since i allready have a 45/70 i would choose the 375 since it shoots relativly flat. I guess i recomend both!

cheesehead that includes me,too! But a 200# whitetail or mulie is a long poke from any DG animal I've ever seen.
I have killed several bison over 1800# with mine. and i'm sure under the right circumstances could kill a 10' brown bear, a 40" cape buffalo, and a 70# elephant. trouble is no one can gaurantee "the right circumstances ". Fact is I could probably kill those animals with my 218 Bee under "the right" circumstances. Gems

i agree with Redhawk1, i actually love the 45/70, especially the 1895. I am taking my 1895 to a cowboy shoot on Saturday. Ten steel targets at 50-200 yards, a timed fire event. I have loaded some 350 grain Oregon Trail Laser Cast bullets over some IMR 4064 to travel about 1500 fps, a medium powered load, for sustained fire in the competition event. Just another interesting use for the 45/70 lever. They also have a competition for the 45/70 single shots with targets out to 300 yards called buffalo gun.

well i think that will do it for me 95% sure on the 95 in 45-70.  i want the pistol grip stock so i am going to go with the reg. 95 over the guide gun. thinking about cuttin the barrel  down to an  even 20".  any thoughts?  thanks again.

romney is a pretty good was from me.  i live in weston.  about 2.5 hours if not mistaken.  the deer hunting over here is not bad.  i would like to see the dnr put a limitation of sorts on what you could kill( size of buck or age).  its usually a slaughter around our farm.  let a 4 or 6 point walk and 10 minutes later here the gun crack.  but. what do you do.

hillbilly jake, I know what you mean. Our area has 12, 20 Acre lots and we don't allow hunting unless you are a land owner in the area.  I think there was only one other hunter out last year. I passed on a spike, fork horn a 6 point and an 8 point buck last year. The good think is, my land butts up to West Vaco and it is a private land for now, but I heard it was sold to a developer. So I will see how things go in a few years.

I have a 1895 Guide gun with a 18.5 inch barrel Stainless. It is an accurate gun and fun to shoot.

I'll throw my vote for the 45-70.

I have a couple of rolling blocks, a bolt action (Siamese Mauser), and a trapdoor.

The Marlin 1895 is a good firearm, and if you look at the spec you will see it matches the old Winchester 1886 lightweight for weight and length.  Not a bad recommendation for a rifle.

Do you hand load?  If so you could have some fun with everything from smoky powder to the smokeless stuff.  I prefer smoky and lead but I do understand there are other options available.

I don't recall WVa as having much in the way of real long shots so the 45-70 ought be fine.

Good luck.
