I suspect the article that mentioned mailing the stuff wasn't talking about Africa but only within the US or perhaps for trips to Alaska. I've seen articles recommending that you ship guns and/or ammo to yourself in care of your guide or outfitter. Legal in the US but not so necessarily outside the US. This advice is especially appropriate when you are hunting in AK and driving thry Canada with handguns as your weapon of choice for the hunt. You cannot drive thru Canada with them but can ship them ahead to yourself in care of your guide or outfitter as I understand the law.

Within the USA it's a No brainer if that's what you want to do. However getting through canadian customs with a gun will cost about 25 bucks and a few moments to fill out paperwork(for a rifle) no handguns.

My brain is not thinking in NA hunting and gun laws while on this forum, so I never even considered that that writer was talking about NA hunting. Even if he were it would be very bizzare to have added that advice/opinion to the topic of Africa gun transport in this thread!

That abberv. of the head stamp should be just fine. It would not work if it were stamped 30/06 though. RSA has become much more savvy about guns and brass head stamping in the last few years.

One thing that should be considered by anyone travelling or planning to travel to Africa is to have the barrel stamped or engraved with the same serial number as the action. Most African Countries consider the barrel to be the gun not the action. It's actually the law today that the barrel must be stamped with a serial number. It's been a "policy" to ignore that for visiting hunters.

That is very strongly rumoured to be changing back to a requirement for visitors. If you're at the gunsmith anyway for some reason I would (I actually have) had all my guns stamped this way just to be sure It's done ahead of time.

I talked to the outfitter about carrying the ammo in the rifle cases and he said it was a NO NO. Because in Africa
it's against the law. He also said that the ammo has to be in orignal containers. [ cardboard boxes ] So I put my reloads into some of those orignal cardboard boxes to be carried in my suitcase and locked.

In what country?  I carried pistol and rifle ammo in 2006 to south Africa in my gun case along with my revolver and my rifle in two plastic MTM cases.  I did not go to jail and was allowed to pass through SAPs without incident.  Use a service like Air 2000 and you will not have any problems.

Who is your outfitter?  Does he have a website?

Actually to update you guys, one can drive through Canada now with a hand gun regardless if he's been hunting with one in Alaska.  You have to contact Canadian Customs prior to the trip and register the firearms for a price.  Once the approval is given, drive to the Customs gate and present the firearm and paperwork.  Canadian Customs do have a web site you should go to for accurate info.  Just a point of information.  As to the thread, can one buy powder and primers for handloading in RSA.  I'm curious since cartridges are so valuable for safari hunting, I have a small loading press and have handloaded my big game rifles with it, but can components be obtained and/or can they be shipped via FEDEX,ie ahead of time.?

I've had way to much stuff disapear in RSA through the mail to risk that as an option.

You will not find smokeless powders in RSA that are available in the USA. All smokeless powder is unioque RSA branded.
