What's a good router for a beginner?
« on: May 09, 2007, 08:16:53 AM »
Hello Everyone,
I have a project in the garage that hit a stand still last night.  I am building a frame for a photograph of my Great Grandpa's unit taken back in WWI.  It's a 5'L panoramic that I want to preserve.  I am planning on using the router to notch out the frame from the back side so it'll work like a regular frame.
For most of my previous projects I have used a craftsman 19.2 volt trimmer as a router.  It worked exceptionally well before but this time I won't work out.  I have about every cordless 19.2 craftsman power tool there is and they work great for as much as I need to use them.
What kind of router should I buy?  Keeping in mind that it won't get used that much if hardly ever.

Nevermind Everyone,
I found what wasn't working with my little cheapo craftsman and fixed it.  There was a loose screw, go figure.  Anyway, it worked great.

I am glad you got it worked out. If you really need a router that will proform I would go with the Porter Cable. With one of their routers and tables I don't see how you could go wrong.   Dale

Whatever you do, make sure you use your safety equipment all the time.  Especially on the crapsman stuff.  Another thread here I mentioned how the ball bearings on the depth adjustment came out of one and bounced into the bit.  Not good.

I use a dewalt now, but it was a toss up between it and the portercable when I purchased it

I have considered Dewalt as well. I need a big router for my router table like a 3 HP but they are expensive!!!!!!!!!!

Porter Cable for sure is a great router. The place I work we have about 25 or 30 of them and they work great.
