Steel Cases
« on: November 05, 2006, 03:31:57 AM »
The other day I was at the range and found three 30-06 cases that have a radius groove about 3/8" from the base. They also felt heavier than brass, are a gray color, and are magnetic. This leaves me to conclude they are steel, but why? What are they used for? What is the groove for? Where is the origin of this type of case?

that is interesting.  I don't remember seeing anything like that before.  What does the headstamp say?  I can not read it in the pic.

The headstamp has only "30-06 SPRG" stamped on it along with a symbol I can only descirbe as a "P." covered with a "V"

Very interseting.  I don't recognize it.  There is a International Ctg Collectors Asso forum. Why don't you try there.  Let us know what you find out.

I need to check my references for sure, but i believe these steel cases were made overseas, possibly from Korea. They were made of steel simply because steel is cheaper than brass. Much like most of the 7.62x39 ammo for AK47 and SKS use.

I have seen something similar. It is probably a practice round for something much larger
such as a 57mm recoilless rifle or shoulder fired anti-armor weapon of some sort.. A subcaliber practice adapter was used to fire them. Whole lot cheaper than firing the real thing. I have seen them all the way from 4mm to 50 caliber. I have to ask what kind of a range you were at? Is it a standard range or just somewhere that people go to shoot such as an old quarry. You may think I am crazy but you may want to show those to the local ATF or Sheriff. The way things are now you can't be too cautious.
If they are old and rusty I wouldn't worry about it, probably too late anyway if something was afoot.

The range I was at, is a range run by the local Rod & Gun, which I am a Member of and use regularly (at least once a month). It's not very big, only 100 yds. long and three shooting benches.

One other thing. I believe these steel cases had the extra groove cut in them for machinegun clips for belt feed. These may have been designed to use in something like the Browning machinegun.

They might be Russian, of recent manufacture.  I know that Wolf loads steel cased ammo in 30-06, but they are green lacquered steel.  Brown Bear has used zinc, or what looks like zinc to coat the steel cases.
