Cannon shoot in Granby, Massachusetts
« on: May 07, 2007, 02:55:55 PM »
I attended my first cannon shoot this past Saturday in Granby, Massachusetts It was put on by the American Artillery Association. I went to watch and check things out, but within an hour I was a powder monkey on one of the gun crews.

Thats me on the left in the grey sweatshirt jacket and red hearing protectors. My wife gots lots of pictures of my back  8) .

Most of the shooting was 5 shots on a 100 yard target, but here we are firing canister shot at the 5-enemy-guys target at 50 yards.

I sure learned a heck of a lot in 4 hours !

What kind of cannon were you shooting and the other guys to your right? How did the canister shot do?

Looks like fun!

We were shooting some sort of Mexican field gun... never heard of it before, so I don't recall all the details.

The one to the right.. heck if I know... maybe one of the experts here can tell you. I do know that the one to the right used a detachable tubular sight (non-optical) with vernier adjustments on it. It was fired by "Lydia", the AAA club secretary who can be seen to the right in the first picture. She told me she has been shooting cannons for about 30 years, which would probably have been when she was about 5 years old.

The canister worked good for us... I beleve we one the canister competition. The owner of the gun had figured out how to hold the shot together untill about 10 yards before the target, but it separated reliably on all three shots. Other teams either had it open up way too soon or go thru as one solid projectile.

I sure can... here is a link to the schedule page of the American Artillery Assoc web site.

http://www.americanartillery.org/aaa/AAAst.html

Membership is $20 annually (you can sign up at a match).

I havn't grasped the entire scene yet... I am a mere newby, but from what I gather so far anything 1 inch or over is legal to shoot.

There are some projectile length to bore length to bore diameter rules in mortar that need to be adhered to.

They do not appear to be anal about guns being historical like some organizations are.

They are justa bucha nice people that like to shoot big guns.
