Barnes 275 gr loads for .480 Ruger
« on: April 23, 2007, 04:25:59 AM »

Barnes has a 275 gr .475 bullet for the .480 Ruger.  I am considering loading it for whitetail hunting this fall.  Has anyone done any loading with this bullet?  Everything I have read says these Barnes bullets are great stuff.  So far, I've only taken deer with handloads and factory loads using the 325 gr XTP.   Anyone have any experience taking game with the Barnes handgun bullets?

Corbon quotes their loaded ammo with this Barnes bullet running about 1550 fps in a 7.5" barrel.

I emailed Barnes regarding loads for the 275 gr XPB in the 480.  They sent me only one load, using H110, only reaching 1350 fps.  I am puzzled by this considering the standard factory load with a 325 gr bullet reaches 1350 fps, and Corbon quotes 1550 fps with the 275 gr XPB.   I have emailed them back questioning the relatively tame load data, but have not received a reply.

Anyone out there more knowledgeable on reloading care to comment on these differences?  I had considered working up a load for the 275gr XPB for hunting this fall, but if the only loading data isn't getting past 1350 fps, then I might as well stay with the Gold Dot 325 at that velocity, or the 275 gr Gold Dot up at 1550-1600 fps.

thanks in advance for any comments!
