Anyone Hunted Here?

It seems like a nice place.  I don't want to drive too far.  I'm tired of paying for hunts, and coming home empty handed.

If you are wanting a hunt in Tennessee, check out www.tennboar.com.  Daniel is a great guide and runs a top notch operation.  He also has a no-kill no-pay guarantee I believe.  The last time we were there, we killed one pig that was 625+ lbs and saw at least 20 others.

My brother, my son, and myself went on a boar hunt at Ken Moody's Clarkrange Hunting Lodge in Tennessee 3 years ago. It was everything they said it would be and more. Our 3 boars went between 225lbs and 245lbs. Our guide was the greatest and we more than received our money's worth. Here is their website:

Did you guys eat your hogs?  I klilled one a few years ago and the smell when it was cooked was so bad you could barely stay in the house.  I know it was properly cared for, quickly processed, and frozen.  It didn't make us sick, it just smelled and tasted very musky.

After we had our hogs processed at Clarkrange Lodge, they told us we couldn't have come at a better time for "eating" the hogs. Apparently, the acorn crop was unusually good that year and that is what made these hogs better eating. It was the best "game" I have ever eaten ... the chops, roasts, etc ... all was really good. I suppose it was extra good due to the acorns.

I am surprised that lots of acorn would improve the taste of hogs.  In earlier times in our area it was the custom to let the hogs run semi-wild in the woods and live off the roots and acorns.  In the early winter when it was time to butcher them the farmers would round them up and put them in a pen.  Then for about a month or so they were fed only corn.  According to local legend this was to flush the taste of the acorns, which are high in tannin, out of the meat.  Just curious as I work at a state park and that is one of the things we tell on our tours.  Does anyone know for sure?  Please pardon me for getting somewhat off topic.

Ranger J ...

You bring up a valid point concerning the acorns. This was one of the first things they told us after we arrived at the lodge. They said the hogs tasted better than in recent memory because of the abundant number of acorns. I assumed it to be true and the meat was very good. I do not know for sure.

Swampman, I hunted there with my brother in law about 5 or 6 years ago.  He took a red boar about 250 lbs.  I saw plenty of pigs, but nothing I wanted to shoot (they pretty much all looked like, well pigs).  No black hairy beasts as I had hoped.  However, the lodge is nice and they feed you very well (simple food, but plenty of it).  If you just want to shoot a hog, eat like one (haha) and have a good time, I can certainly recommend it.

JUST GOT BACK , WAS REAL NICE , THEY LET US HUNT ON OUR OWN , HAD A BOAR COME AT US ( NOT A FULL CHARGE , BUT GOT OUR ATTENTION ) ANYWAY HE HAD 3-3 1/2 TUSK AND WEIGHED OVER 200LBS. SO I SHOT HIM !
TASTE GREAT !
THEY HAVE THREE AREAS TO HUNT , HOLD OFF SHOOTING UNTIL YOU SEE WHAT YA WANT , RUSSIAN BOAR , OR OTHER , DON'T SHOOT ONE WITH FLOPPY EARS , NOT A WILD PIG !
I SAW 300 LB HOGS BUT THEY HAVE SHORT TUSK ! ( IF YOU GET IT MOUNTED THEY PUT IN ANY SIZE TUSK YOU WANT , SO GO FOR SIZE AND THEY CAN FIX THE REST !
I SHOT MINE IN THE NECK AT 20 YDS , WITH A 300 WIN MAG. , 180 GR FEDERAL SOFT PT. BLUE AND GOLD BOX !
HOG FLINCHED , STOOD THERE FOR AN UNCOMFORTABLE TIME THEN FELL OVER !
IF YOU GO REMEMBER YOU ARE IN THE FENCE WITH BIG MEAN STUFF ALL AROUND , LOOK BEHIND YOURSELF ALOT ! AND CARRY ENOUGH GUN TO STOP A BUFF. OF ELK ETC.  OH YEA FOOD WAS GREAT ! ROOMS OK
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

"...I am surprised that lots of acorn would improve the taste of hogs....."

Might be it depends upon the species, its been awhile since I lived back East, but I'm recalling knowing that the acorns of white oaks are a whole lot more palable than those of red oaks and the like, and that white oak acorns were a fallback staple for the Indians.

Be careful of what you wish for! These things tear the hell out of things. Check the Missouri Department of Conservation website. They are trying to contain these hogs, as some of the locals seem to be releasing feral hogs. Fort Leonard Wood in central Missouri has a hog problem and wants hunters in to help out, no hunting permit and no limit. Check it out for yourself before you load the truck , kiss the wife, and take off. Laws change from year to year. I like poppin' pigs myself, but after seeing the damage, I dunno.

Ok you might be right ! but it would be nice to hunt some pigs without paying thru the nose and driving 400 - 500 miles !
We have 9 weeks of deer , 2 bp and 7 reg. gun , but some hog hunting would be a nice change or off season hunt !
and thanks for info !

Can't speak for hogs and acrons, but we lived in N. Louisiana for a number of years and my wife flat will not eat deer killed in Indiana....corn and soy bean fed.

Why ? grain fattened meat is good around here ( farmers don't much like it though ), corn different out there ?
