union style coehorn handles
« on: May 03, 2007, 04:58:58 AM »
Where can I get the handles for a 95% scale union coehorn, Hern sell them for 30 bucks a pair (that seems high to me) an I'm not sure if they are cast or formed. I have checked several of the sponsors but could not find them. Anybody know of any good ones?

Hern's are cast. They are on the mortar in my avatar.

To do them right takes a lot of time. I have made my own and they can take 1/2 to 3/4 hr to do a good job so $30 a pair is not unreasonable.   ;D

Rickk did you get just the handles or the whole kit.

The whole kit.

The bolts are unique and would be hard to find elsewhere. All-thread would probably work, but the bolts replicate the "real thing".

The bolts probably wouldn't work on my platform because it's scaled down a little from their specs. if theirs is 9X15X31. What is the hole size and spread on the handles.

I can check when I get home tonight on the hole spacing. The bolts are a tad oversize even for fulll size... on purpose I believe. There are several inches of threads for cutting to exact size. 95% scale should be no problem.

This thread discusses making handles for a half scale Coehorn.  When you see what is involved, $30 a pair including screws will seem charity.

The hardware took almost as much time to make as the barrel for my 12 pdr Coehorn.  The bolts themselves took about 2 hours a piece.  The handles I ended up making were bent out of 1/4” flat stock.  They look pretty good but they are a little hard on the hands if you are going to carry it for any distance.  At some point I’ll make up some proper ones.

$30 a pair isn’t a bad price.  They should be ok for you bed.  At 95% scale the handles would only be about a 1/4” shorter than full scale.

If you scale the handles down too much you will have to scale your hands down as well... a difficult thing to do.  :o
