Coon trap fastening
« on: May 10, 2007, 07:07:37 AM »
Out of personal experience what works or doesn't for holding coon? One book says don't waste time with drowning rigs, coon will go for the bank. Another book says coons are so strong at pulling out you should always use drags. One video shows coons drowned, held on rod sliding rigs in a culvert, and held fast at a staked dirt hole. A couple say that if the coon gets into protective cover it won't fight the trap as bad. One says that coon in even shallow water will not chew their paw as much or will die soon from hyporthermia. Most sources site the trap size as eithor use one small enough to catch the pad and not have enough room for a chew out or use a large strong trap because coons are so strong. How about some feed back from your own personal experiences

I like the #1 1/2 coil and cable drowners for coon. The #11 will hold any coon it gabs onto, and I have caught many ,many coon in my #1 stoploss at my rat sets. The key with holding coon in your rats sets, is to use a staking system that will hold any coon.Lathe and willow stobs, are not allowed on my line.1x1 hardwood stakes 4 to 6 feet in length are what I use for rats. This system has held many coon over 30 pounds and beaver up to 53 pounds.
Coon are big and strong, but I am opposed to using big traps on them--I don't need them.
