Re chambering 22-250
« on: May 31, 2003, 04:32:19 PM »
Hi folks,
I recently acquired a second Encore brl. in 22-250. As i dont need two of
them, i was thinking of having one them re-chambered. Both are 26"
bull brls. I would prefer to go with a commercially available cartridge
(no wildcats) if possible. Thanks for any replies.

ONE MORE :  It looks like you could have a 220 swift in your future, but I would wait a while and see if another caliber I needed came avail on a trade basis, would save a little and you might even get some boot. :D   JIM

jhm,
the 220 Swift would require a bushing to bring the chamber down to the right diameter. I can't find any cartridge in .22 caliber with the same or larger case diameter than the 22-250 has (not even the .224 Weatherby Magnum is as large in diameter). Looks like it's trade or wildcat time. I could see a .243 necked down to .22 - that would be a real rocket in a 26 inch barrel. You might need a set of 308 dies with a .22 caliber neck plug and a .22 neck sizing die but it would be a sweet shooter!

I believe that is called a 22-243 middlestead, and there is a similar one on the 6mm Rem case both of these will burn.  I say go with the 22-243 and start reloading.

PaulS :  I see where you are talking about the bushing I was only thinking the shoulder area and the overall case length, thanks for pointing that out I was way off thanks again. :D    JIM

Jim,
not at all! I sometimes look at changes the same way. It's what happens when you have one eye in the book and the other on excited  expectations.

Jamie,
I would go the same way but he did say that he didn't want any wildcats. That's why I mentioned putting it up for trade for something else. I have a project in the beginning stages for a "best buy" '03-A3 30-06 that I got without a bolt. I'm gonna make it into a 6mm Roberts or a 6mm Remington improved. But then I am putting a new barrel on it so I can do pretty much whatever I want as far as cartridges go.
