Kinetic Bullet Pullers with 45-70 Anyone ?
« on: May 09, 2007, 10:36:52 AM »
I need to pull some jacketed bullets , crimped lightly, on several 45-70 rounds. I 'd like to hear from anyone who has done this same thng with a kinetic type puller ( looking at the RCBS or Frankford ) and how things went generally. Thanks

The first kinetic bullet puller I had was a Quinetics that I bought in 1977 and it lasted 20 years
being used. The part that would wear out was the shell holder, but I got replacements from
Midway.  I now use the R.C.B.S. and in is stronger and have had no problems. I have pulled
45-70, 450 marlin, 30-06 (family of same size head .473) and all magnums (.532).  Bullets and
cases have no damage. I think the trick to using this bullet puller is to come down straight on
a very hard surface. Hope that helps.

I use the RCBS kinetic puller for my 45-70 loads. It works GREAT, no damage to bullet or cases and I can recover my powder. It comes in real handy now that one of my favorite sayings is "well, that didn't work out too good".

I used the RCBS model. I had a short piece of 2x4 that I hammered on. I found that a quick SNAP of the wrist just before you hit the board worked real well. If those bullets are hard crimped, they won't come out easily!

I have been using one for quite a while. I just discovered that .500 S&W won't fit. Oh well, use the vice, ruin the bullet, and dump powder everywhere.

The 500 S&W works in the Quinetics puller.

something to try with the real big cases is to not use the chuck. My 500 linebaugh cases fit in it without a chuck and the case rim just grabs the side of the plastic pullet. Saves lots of time.

Lloyd, I use my RCBS puller for "oopsey" 45-70 loads without any trouble.  As you know, most of mine are paper patched which doesn't present a problem as there's no crimp, but on occasion, I load Remington's 405 grainer for my partner's Guide Gun.  Yes, I've had to pull them.  The chuck fits over the case without undo problems and that heavy bullet easily "breaks" the crimp when you slam the puller down on a cement floor.

I have an older Midway and the case doesn't fit in the thing with no chuck. Oh well, if I didn't spend my money on more equipment, I would probably buy beer and get fatter.

RCBS works great. Loaded 50 rounds way to hot for my liking and pulled the remaining 40something with the RCBS ;D

I used the reloading press and the caliber shell holder. I modified a pair of thin pliers to grab the crimp groove as I lowered the ram and pulled the bullets. If you are care full you wont damage the bullets to much. The top of the press held the pliers.
