Winchester GXP1 22-250 ammo
« on: May 20, 2007, 02:34:10 PM »
Went out shooting yesterday. I had my 22-250 handi stainless bull barrel 22". I was shooting the Winchester GXP1 45 gr. hp. white box ammo from Walmart. I was shooting at 100 yds & I couldn't get it dialed in. Was shooting about 3" groups. I wasn't really shure if it was me or what. I had my brotherinlaw shoot 3 shots & was the same for him. I was wondering has anyone else experienced this problem with this ammo? I know it's pretty hot, the primers are alittle flat & can see the machine marks from the receiver in the primer. I have some new Remington brass, 55 gr. v-maxs, cci mag. primers & some h380. guess I need to work up a load & hope for the best. Is 45 gr. too light for a 22-250 handi?

I got about the same groups or slightly smaller with the Rem UMC ammo in my fliuted 22-250, but well less than 1" using H4895 and the 50gr Vmax. It just takes the right load. Seems to me Stimpy got his shooting very well.

Check to see if a fresh round is recessed slightly in the chamber from the barrel face when you drop one in, too much headspace which is a common problem on some Handis, will also cause flat primers.

Checked & seems to be pretty flush.

"Pretty" flush is relative, I believe even .002" will cause flat primers in the 22-250, perfectly flush is ideal, any recess isn't good since that's on top of the barrel to frame gap, which could be as much as .002" also, that makes .004" headspace. If they're not real flat and you're not getting cratering around the pin strike, you're probably ok, and you may be right about the ammo being on the hot side, Hornady 22-250 ammo has been reported as too hot also. ;)

That's why I'm gonna work up a load & see how it works out.

Hello

I shot the same ammo in my 22-250 Handi, a new round sets about .001"/.002 " below flush. The primers do flatten out on the WWB, on the box it states that the FPS is 4000, this is the only factory round I shot that this happens with. Of the three different factory loadings I shot the Winchester WB 45 Gr JHP shoots the best. The 55 Gr Rem. PSP and UMC 45 Gr JHP do not do as well. Best I had with the WWB was just under 1" at 100 yds., three shot group. I am working on a hand load but it is taking longer then I would have liked.

Have a great day

Joe

Goodwrench. I just thought of something. If I remember right you have a BSA scope on it. I had a BSA on my 223 bull and had the same problem. I coud not get it sighted in. I returned the scope and bought a 6x24x40 Bushnell Banner and after that it shot sub moa evry time. Just a thought. Also check the rings for tight and the scope base.
