To buy or not?
« on: February 24, 2007, 06:32:41 AM »
I have a chance to pick up a Glock 38 for 400.00 used with extra clips and all. My Buddies who consider them selfs GUN EXPERTS" say to avoid the 45 gap rounds and go with the 45ACP Glock instead. They say the 45 gap is over rated and sometimes it is hard to find ammo. Any opinions here???

I know the ammo is a little harder to find.  Around here .45 acp is real common.  As for the performance I can't help you.

Ammo here in NY is getting easier to find. The NYS Troopers recently switched to the Glock .45 GAP. I have no experience with the round, but from what I have read, it looks good. The ACP will always be cheaper to shoot than the GAP. Perfomance is about equal, at least on paper

I have a glock 37 in 45 GAP and I love it. It's ultra accurate good recoil and a fun gun to shoot. Much like you I picked mine up used. The ammo can be a bit hard to find at times but I have found a few places on line with good prices on it so it doesn't bother me. I have both plinking ammo and defense rounds for it. As for being over rated I don't think so, I'm getting pretty much the same velocity from the GAP and as far as I can tell the gun is just as  accurate if not more so than my 1911 in 45 ACP. As for ammo price I'm getting speer lawman ammo from the web at 16.27 for a box of 50.

Its a nice shooting round in both "power factor" loads for matches and self defense loads.  I like it as much as the 40S&W 180 gr loads.

I don't think its on its death bed, but the round is going to have to have more manufactors making weapons for it to thrive.

And the round count doesn't bother me, but it does several folks.

Everything is pearsonal, but around here ammo is available.  Seems like a good buy.

I'm the last one to bad mouth a new round but, I have to say I don't know if the .45GAP will make it long term.
It's in a ''gap'' between the .40S&W and .45ACP that may not need to be filled.
It is a .45 caliber which makes it better, in my opinion, than the .40S&W but with reduced power compared to the ACP.
So to answer your question, I don't know.
I bought a 357SIG M31 that everyone told me was a bad choice but I love the round and think after many rounds down range that it is the choice for most defence situations.
Ammo for my preferred round is expensive so I bought dies and now reload for it.

The GAP has showed some marginal increases in performance with high end rounds. The main idea was to make a 45 that was basically the same grip size as the 40S&W.

I would go with the 45ACP. Far easier to find ammo and plenty of good inexpensive ammo available. To my knowledge, there are no "cheap" GAP rounds available.

When the GAP didn't take off like expected, plenty of GAP pistols came on the market at reduced prices. I don't bad mouth the caliber (it seems to perform well), I just question the wisdom of such a proprietary caliber when there are so much good, readily available calibers.
