Can't find one locally.....
« on: May 07, 2007, 03:59:24 PM »
.....So, I'm just ranting......

Been saving for awhile to get a new Ultra Varmint Fluted in .223 but no one has it locally. Called Walmart today and they said Sportsouth has none and do not know when they will get them. Told me to call back in a week or two. Did not want to order through a FFL due to the high tranfer fees they charge.

Have you ever felt "All dressed up and no place to go" ?

Digger,

I feel your pain.

You can monitor Sports South directly to see when they get them in at:  http://www.internetguncatalog.com/
(See MEGA SEARCH at bottom of page)

RR Arms does have a couple in stock, but you've still got shipping and your local FFL fees to deal with:  http://www.rrarms.com/catalog.php?prod=GSB2F23

HTH.

Give Whittakers a call, they're in your home state, they list the Fluted 223 and they're good to deal with! ;)

I second whittakers.  He had several a couple of weeks ago when I was there.  He keeps TONS of handis in stock, and almost always seems to have the 223 fluted.

Still working on a 55gr load but it sure shoots the 69gr match king good. Kurt

Whittakers do not have in stock as with Gilberts. Guess I'll watch for them at Sportsouth and see what happens.

Thanks for the help.

I can't let it go.......been calling all over the area around here with no luck. I did find the Ultra varmint in .223 with a 24" HB. Beside the stock that comes on the Ultra Varmint and the Ultra Varmint Fluted is there any other differences in the two? Thought about getting the U.V. but not sure I would be satisfied. What are the advantages or disadvantages of the two? 99% of the time it would be used shooting off the bench.

Your opinion would be greatly apprecaited.  Thanks

The UV fluted has a nice wide forend that would be better for bench work, it also has a nice bipod adapter that works great. Whether it will shoot well from the bipod is another matter, most do tho.

Another option would be the thumbhole Ultra from RR.

You didn't say where locally was, so I can't help you there, but if you have a Sportsman's Warehouse nearby, they usually have the fluted ultra with choate stock.  The last time I was in the store near me, they had one of each of 204, 223, and 22-250.

I don't know what your local ffl dealers charge for transfer but I just pick one up off of Gunbroker.  I got the Handi I was looking for and shipping and transfer was less than buying locally.  Of course I did have to shop until I got the deal...

You can do a little shopping for an FFL transfer dealer too, I drive 10 miles to a mom & pop shop that only charges $20 to transfer, which is half of what anyone else charges. Unfortunately it usually costs me more than gas money, I have to pass Mayer's butcher shop that makes the best teriyaki jerky in the world, so I always have to buy a pound of that on the way!! :D

I checked two dealers today. One wanted $55 and the other was $35 +tax, Geez. I think I'll get a FFL and just do transfers.

skifastchad, This UVF hunt is taking place in the Louisville, Ky. area. Thanks Tim for all your help, I'll try Gunbroker to see if I can come up with a dealer within REASON.

This is turning into a personal goal and I feel the chase will be worth it.

Be sure to contact the FFLs that you're considering, even some you're not if they're close, those fees aren't current, my FFL is listed at $25, but she charges $20. Some of em aren't currently licensed or their fees have changed too.

Good luck in your quest!! ;)

And some FFL's give a discount if you have your CHL...Mine does and he gets my buisiness.  Like Tim said be sure you check first and then bid or buy...

strick28, I stopped in a pawn shop today I frequent often and the gentleman there said he would do a transfer for $15.00. Knowing that I checked Gunbroker and there it was for less then what i could have bought it for locally if in stock. I will have a grand total of $305.00 in it when the ink dries.

Thanks to everyone for sticking with me and helping. Tim you were a huge help not letting me give up and showing there are more way to "skin a liberal".
